Trying to code and failing miserably since 2021. I love books, mathematics and a bit of chaos. I also write (bad) Rust 🦀

So basically, today PHP got two critical bugs that let anyone run code on your server without even logging in, which is bad, and then the details leaked before the patch was even out, which is worse, and it works on WordPress and MediaWiki and Magento and Joomla and Laravel, and Censys says like 1.5 million servers are running a version with no fix, so the NSA was like "take your system offline," and the FBI was like "take your system offline," and CISA and the UK and CERT-EU were all like "take your system offline," and then the Prime Minister of Japan, the actual Prime Minister, posted at 5:55 in the morning telling 48.8 million people to take their system offline, so everyone took their system offline, like the Dutch cybersecurity agency took its own website offline, and the Dutch parliament went offline, and the Port of Rotterdam went offline, and Finland and France and Denmark started pulling government sites, and Wikipedia went down, and Archive.org went down, and Asana and GOG and Something Awful went down, and the University of Vienna's webmail went down for some reason, and that's just PHP. Because GitLab also dropped a CVSS 10.0, which is the highest score they give out, for a bug that's been there since 2014, so that's every self-hosted GitLab for twelve years, and then LiteLLM 1.107.0 got hijacked and shipped a credential stealer and a remote access trojan in every single wheel and the Docker images, including latest, and you didn't even have to import it, just installing it was enough, and it's the second time this year, and then Railway paused every deployment on the entire platform because someone got into the environment variables, so now everyone has to rotate every secret they've ever stored there, and TiDB Cloud said someone was walking around inside with stolen credentials for basically a month and an extortion group says they took 10.6 terabytes, and Zeabur got breached for the second time in two months and is just shutting down, like the whole company, and Node.js patched remote code execution and a TLS bypass, and CISA says Plex is being actively exploited, and someone took over 300 Tor exit relays to steal SSH passwords, and SafePay ransomware has hit over 600 critical infrastructure orgs, and India's biggest bank filed a data loss incident, and Japan has been in an official state of emergency in cyberspace since October 9, which honestly explains the 5:55 AM post. Oh, and eMudhra, a certificate authority that's issued over 60 million certificates, whose entire job is proving websites are who they say they are, was supposed to be using private keys that are random numbers over a hundred digits long, and one of them was 4. Just 4. And the others were like 66 and 237. Anyway, it's Wednesday.

I'm fascinated by the rise of frictionmaxxing as a response to a frictionless life. We engineer away inconvenience, only to discover that some of the friction we removed was part of what made life feel alive in the first place
Someone could probably write a book (if they haven’t already) about the cycle of technology productizing the removal of friction in the name of convenience only for us to discover that the friction was a load-bearing part of the social compact.

Speculation- concerts solve the social coordination problem. They're relatively rare (someone you like enough is in town), are large enough that you can go solo, and is an extension of a solo activity people are doing anyway (listening to music). Everything else requires having a social circle willing to forego entertainment from comfort of own home on a random Saturday night.

My controversial opinion is that heavy drinking with coworkers (especially on work travel) is the only team building activity out there that does what all other team building activities purport to do
It was before my time so I have no idea but maybe the primary purpose of big office parties with lots of boozing was tacitly for the benefit of the young and single employees So when evil people made "meeting a mate at work" something frowned upon, it necessarily died

Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.

You can if you get off your phone. I wish I was joking
No, you cannot walk 10,000 steps daily, get 8 hours of sleep, cook every night, clean every day, take care of a family, make time for your own hobbies, and still be productive at work every day. This is not just propaganda, it is nonsense. Free yourself from it.

“Young people… who messed up their lives” were essentially not a category of person until the mid-2000s. It was not possible to “make the wrong decision” between 16-22 (except murdering someone or picking up a heroin habit) that would derail your life until like 20 years ago.
You know when you’re playing a video game and you get late into it and you see how your choices are shaping the game and it’s decidedly not going well? So what do you do? You hit reset and try again. Unfortunately this mindset has taken hold of millions of young people. People who realize they’ve messed up their lives. People who think the only way to improve is a full blown revolution; burn it all down and hope for something better. There’s no reset in life though. There’s no social conditions in which these people would be successful. They’d burn it all down anyway.

"vibe coding is awesome, vibe maintaining is horrible, and vibe maintaining someone else’s slop is a nightmare."
Replying to @JackEllis
I replaced Adobe audition for a podcast recording flow with something I built myself. I replaced Retool with a custom system. The problem is that vibe coding is awesome, vibe maintaining is horrible, and vibe maintaining someone else’s slop is a nightmare.

old people understand that you gotta take every side quest and exhaust every dialogue option
Noticing that old people tend to explore their environment like they’re playing some real life version of Skyrim. Just wandering into random buildings and opening a dialogue tree. “What sort of business is this?”

I spent today in a stupor... Last night, my MRI results came back my disease is worse than I thought The space between my uterus and rectum is almost completely sealed shut with scar tissue. Normally, this is an open pocket. My uterus wall is the most affected… the endometriosis has grown all the way through the muscle wall, extending up to the top of the uterus. My rectum and lower colon are tethered… pulled and stuck by adhesions where they meet. Inside, I am twisted, contorted, scarred. Earlier this week I was on the phone with my mum, asking her about her own previous menstrual cycles. I asked questions that no one had ever asked her… did she also have pain while defecating? Just how painful were her periods? A memory of my 13th birthday comes back… me finding her curled up on the couch, doubled over in pain. I concluded that she, too, probably had endo. She tried to explain that ‘back then’ there just “wasn’t that much attention on female health”. Funny, this is a line I still say today. I thought about my future daughter… would she be repeating the same line in 30 years? Oh.. can I even have a daughter? Maybe not. Infertility affects 30 to 50% of women with endometriosis. My endo is likely stage 4 (the worst stage). There’s so much to say on this topic… For now, all I know is this: I have a slow-growing disease, which is very very burdensome to diagnose, and has been increasingly distorting my body for 8 years… It affects 1 in 10 women, likely more. 190 million people. And yet, most people don’t know about it. So.. what do we do now? Honestly, tonight, idk. If you’d asked me yesterday, I would have told you all about our grand plan to cure my endo. Bryan and I have been cooking up a strategy with scientists around the world. But my results came back so much worse than I thought. Tomorrow I am sure I will wake up, dust off the despair, and get back to work. The usual treatments (hormonal suppression and surgery) don’t cut it. Both suck. And neither is a cure. So, tomorrow, we’ll see what else is possible. But tonight I grieve with millions of women.
