Rhode Island calls itself the Ocean State, but it is also a farming state—just a very small one. And when something is small, scarce, and valuable, how it is stewarded matters more than good intentions.
Over the past decade, Rhode Island has taken a position that sounds noble on its face: encourage new and young farmers—often with community ties—to enter agriculture by helping them acquire farmland. The goal was inclusion, renewal, and generational continuity. Those are worthy aims. But outcomes matter more than intentions, and the outcome has been a farming ecosystem that is more fragile, more failure-prone, and paradoxically more vulnerable to forces that will erase farming altogether.
