Brighton's West Pier opened in 1866, closed to the public in 1975 and was gutted by fire in 2003. Storm Austen has just taken another big piece of it. Sad to watch a bit of seaside history go like this.
We have just lost a big part of the West Pier #Brighton to #StormAusten @StormHour @brightonargus

Storm Austen took a chunk of Brighton’s West Pier on Friday. Boelo turns up today with 80mph gusts. Two named storms in two days, and it’s still October.

80 years ago today, 24 Oct 1946, a captured V-2 went up from White Sands with a 35mm camera snapping every second and a half. About 105km up. The rocket smashed into the desert; the film in a steel cassette survived. Grainy, black and white, the first photo of Earth from space.

Mountain rescue in Storm Boelo: Don’t climb Pen y Fan. Get lost in IKEA instead. No helicopter required.

Sad to hear Tom Skerritt, died at the age of 93. From Alien to Top Gun. His family released a beautiful tribute: “We are heartbroken by his loss. While the world knew Tom through his remarkable acting career, we knew him for his humor, curiosity, wisdom, generosity, and the love he brought into our lives. He cared deeply about imagination, creativity, storytelling, service, veterans, the natural world, and helping others find and share their own voices.”

🚨 Jackdaw Gas Field Approved 🇬🇧 The UK Government has green-lit the Jackdaw gas field off the coast of Aberdeen. Production is set to begin by the end of this month. Where is the gas going? Most of the gas from the Jackdaw field will flow directly into the UK domestic energy network via the St Fergus terminal. At peak production, it is expected to supply roughly 6% of total UK gas demand, helping to boost domestic energy security. Who gets the money? Commercial profits from gas sales will go to the operators, Shell and Equinor. The UK Exchequer will collect profit-related taxes, which are projected to raise nearly £4 billion by 2034. The Green Transition: These tax revenues are earmarked for the government’s new Energy Wealth Fund to invest directly in clean energy projects. While the boost in domestic supply improves energy reliability, the government notes it will not immediately lower household utility bills.
