I assume it's mostly internet echochambers, sensationalism, and the adoption of social media by extremist groups. But the fact that people never research anything and just reinforce their own bias is dangerous. You should actively seek to prove yourself wrong. Think critically.

Unpopular opinion.. smurfing is easily combatted. They just don't want to lose 50%+ of their "player base" though. Take reports seriously, anybody Champ+ with less than 500 wins is obviously a Smurf, but go even further and just look for when they purposely tank their own MMR. Multiple ffs at 3:30 in ranked is an insta lifelong ban. IP ban habitual offenders. Make new accounts level 50 to play ranked. New players can play casual until level 50, they honestly should anyway. If accounts were actually getting banned quickly for smurfing, people wouldn't grind to level 50 just to lose the account that same week.
