New, on "The Seafarer" (an Old English poetry classic), with comments on Ezra Pound's translation, the poem's meaning, the Christian transformation of the Aryan ideal of undying fame, and MORE!
All art is political in the sense that you have to engage in a lot of disingenuous handshakes and phony smiles
There are YouTube personalities you've never heard of with at least a million subscribers, and if you asked any random one of them, "Why do you watch this person's content?" they would be unable to answer.
"The Freudian slip" seems like an ego-preservation story that people tell themselves when they just do something really dumb. They're like, "Nah, I didn't just make a clumsy and moronic mistake. I must have, uhhh, secretly *wanted* that to happen... for, uhh, some reason..."
"Excuse me, are you insulting the Big Mac? The sandwich that revolutionized the culinary industry? Clearly, you lack the intellect to appreciate its elegance, its subtlety, its genius of craftsmanship. Come back when you understand how food works."
It used to be that when I would hear "if you don't like it, you must not understand it. To understand it is to love it" it'd be reserved for artsy-fartsy, postmodern stuff. Never expected the cliché to get so shopworn that people would trot it out to defend dopey popcorn movies.
These lists would be better if they just excluded other genres besides rock. They have the 2nd Miles quintet as #4, and while it's nice to see them get a shout-out, it's like... ok, why not put Coltrane's quartet in there. Or Duke Ellington's orchestra, while we're at it.

It's interesting how the prequels are now going through this moment of critical revisionism. I saw Phantom Menace when I was like 13 and found it godawful. It was proof that George Lucas is not, in fact, a creative genius but merely a guy who stumbled upon a viable concept.
There are about a couple hundred things I see daily that people would have gotten furious about in saner times, it's really no wonder everyone is so mentally ill in the developed world
"Man will continue to invent technologies outside of himself until he either destroys the world or realizes that everything he's created is an inferior copy of the technologies that exist within himself. The question is: which will come first?" - Rudolf Steiner
Twenty years ago, this book came out, and it exposed suburban upper-middle class high school students as being a bunch of soulless, grade-obsessed, teacher-pleasing freaks. Then, mass culture started to become awful as that generation assumed power. What has changed since then?
I feel like a lot of these corporate entertainment franchise movies for nostalgia-starved "kidults" would be doing better if they weren't so loaded with breaking-the-fourth-wall, self-referential jokes.
There should be a book-length study on the philosophy of Abhinavagupta as authoritative and well-researched as Etienne Gilson's book on Thomas Aquinas

Your jazz song for today is "Experiment in Terror" by Kai Winding, prominently featured in the Rhino records compilation "Crime Jazz." The Hammond B-3 organ really needs to come back btw
