Good points about this game! And I can also take this opportunity for a shameless plug and remind people that I recently did a video focusing solely on the graphics of the original Mega Man game! And it’s nearly at 100k views 😱

Mega Man (Capcom, 1987) introduced novel features that defined the genre and the franchise.
What really stood out were two key innovations:
Nonlinear stage selection: Unlike most contemporaries (Super Mario Bros. with its linear progression), you could choose the order of the six Robot Master stages. This added strategy, as each boss’s weakness was part of a rock-paper-scissors system tied to the boss weapons; defeating a boss allowed you to take the weapon that exploited another’s weakness.
Weapon absorption mechanic: Defeating a Robot Master allowed Mega Man to copy and use their special weapon (with limited ammo). This was highly innovative for the era and became trademark feature of the series.
It sometimes feels like Mega Man doesn't get the credit it deserves among the greats. It definitely belongs in that upper echelon group of platformers.
When Patrick Stewart died the other day, I also messaged my dad and asked if he remembered watching the Inner Light with me back in the early 90s. He did. And I cried a little 😭
There is also a ton of garbage on the SNES as well. But one thing I will give you is that the 16 bit era seemed to be the peak of console pixel art game design, until polygons came in and reset the playing field.
NES games felt a bit more experimental and rudimentary by comparison to SNES games for sure. But if I had to make a list of impactful games that shaped my life, the list would be twice as long on the NES even though I had both consoles. I will always prefer the OG Metroid instead of Super, for instance. But that’s because I was in HS by the time Super Metroid came out.
Those formative years between the age of like 8-12 are so incredibly impactful. I know that objectively Super Metroid is a better game than the original, but its impact just wasn’t there for me personally. At least not until college when I was finally able to play through it properly and was old enough to appreciate it.

Somewhere, in a universe next to ours, a man who looks very much like Patrick Stewart wakes up from a long strange dream and begins playing the flute.

In honor of Patrick Stewart’s life, do yourself a favor tonight.
Go watch season 5, episode 25 of Star Trek: The Next Generation.
The episode is titled, “The Inner Light.”
You can thank me tomorrow.
Yeah, I couldn’t agree more. That last season of Picard was such a gift to the fans. It gave the crew the send off they truly deserved. Having Nemesis be the final time we saw the TNG crew together is a timeline I’m glad we don’t have. I’m so thankful we got Picard season 3.

In honor of a legend.
Patrick Stewart voicing King Richard in Lands of Lore: The Throne of Chaos (1993/94, Westwood Studios).
Oh man, I knew the tributes would be coming from the TNG cast, and I know that they are basically a family. So this is just so hard… I was not ready 😭

Patrick was one of those icons who we somehow all took for granted would always be with us.
I grew up as a fan, and was later gifted the privilege of becoming a colleague and friend, working with him for many years on “American Dad!”, “Family Guy”, and “Ted”. He was that rare actor who could take any bit of dialogue and elevate it, making a good writer sound great, and a great writer sound masterful. He was also as humble as they come. I remember exchanging emails with him a number of years ago when he was beginning day 1 of a new film. He commented to me that he always walked onto a new set feeling like the biggest novice there. My stunned reaction was the same as anyone’s would be. I said, “Patrick, if you feel that way, the rest of us are screwed.” We have lost a legendary actor today, and for many of us, a good friend. He will be deeply missed by the entire planet.

To be fair, none of these other games were mainline entries. And we never did get another proper Mario game on the SNES. Yoshi’s Island doesn’t count.
