We've recently finished a project on evaluating various open elevation data sources (e.g. AW3D, ASTER GDEM, GMTED & SRTM) for both polar regions. Numerous heterogeneous data issues have been discovered and a set of solutions to minimize inherent data uncertainties been proposed.
