Connecticut argues the government can ban weapons that are uncommon, and also weapons that are common too! Wow, that Second Amendment sure feels pretty empty and weak, huh.

Also, in Chicago's Heller amicus brief, they argued that handguns could be banned, in part, because they are unsuitable for military use.

Thread done on both briefs here. It's long, enjoy. One last thing to note. Cook County argues repeatedly that AR15s are bad for self-defense, and pistols are better for that purpose. Chicago argued exactly the OPPOSITE in defending its handgun ban in McDonald (another SAF case!). From their briefing in that case:
Cook County and Connecticut have just filed their briefs in Viramontes and Higgins. This thread will look at the Cook County brief first. To the extent the Connecticut brief differs in substance, we'll cover that here too.

Turning briefly now to the Connecticut brief. Again, will only highlight stuff not already seen in Viramontes. Notable that Prelogar is counsel of record.

I've just learned that my favorite country artist of all time, and a man I called "Uncle John" for the past 20 years has passed away. The great and unmatched John Anderson...He loved Jesus, and his family and his country. He was a massive influence on me in more ways that I can count. I love you, Uncle John.

Gotta hand it to them, I really thought I had seen everything after having read dozens of govt briefs these last four years.

Cook County argues resisting tyranny is not a valid purpose anymore, because the government will handle resisting tyranny for us.

Okay... so it looks like we've got 4 bingos so far. Did we miss any? If you've already read the govt's brief, let us know if any of the other spaces deserve a daub. If you haven't read it yet, what are you waiting for?

Oh wow, Cook County seems to have finally given up the unserious argument that AR15s are not "arms" (in the most begrudging way possible, but still).

After the @CivilRights Division found that Berkeley Law has an illegal race-based admissions system, its “flagship” student-run California Law Review thought it would be a bright idea to destroy evidence of possible race discrimination in how it selects its members. We’re investigating! 🤨

Illinois confusingly argues that AR-15s aren't common in hunting because they're only suitable for "anything larger than varmint," but then goes on to argue that states ban AR-15s for hunting large animals because they're *too powerful*

Connecticut says that AR-15s can be banned because they're "significantly more lethal than... a commonly used handgun like the Glock 19" WHICH THE STATE ALSO JUST BANNED
