So, a slight interruption into my normal content, but I am starting my last year (inshallah) of grad school, and starting to think about my capstone project. So if you're a follower with a more academic bent, I might reach out to you for advice. Feel free to tell me no.

The worst LLMism is “and that’s on me” — Oh is it?? Is it really?? Are you going to bear the consequences of your mistake??? I don’t think so.

One time I was TAD On-Pen in the White Cell on night shift and decided to load up an SH-60 with 300 Hellfires and ended up strafing Pyongyang for funsies. I was a poorly supervised JG and bored out of my mind, sue me
A computer simulation run by South Korean and U.S. forces during this summer’s Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise ended with North Korean forces breaking through the front-line corps and reaching Seoul’s outskirts in a conventional scenario, without any use of nuclear weapons. defence-blog.com/simulated-n…

The real Tin Foil hat reading of this scenario is that the UFG scenario is important in promotions for GOs in the ROK Army, so spiking it like this is a way to shake up the leadership and replace it with other types, BTW

Operation URGENT FURY was the operation name for the invasion of Grenada, which occurred 43 years ago today, on 25 October 1983. I was part of the rescue force (B Squadron) to free the Grenadian political prisoners being held in Richmond Hill Prison (today known as His Majesty's Prisons). In six Blackhawk helicopters, we took a lot of Cuban and Grenadian fire at the prison. Seventeen of the rescue force were wounded, eight 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment crew were wounded, and the pilot of helicopter number four CPT Keith J. Lucas was mortally wounded and number four crashed. We were hit by two ZSU-23-2s that were mounted on top of Fort Frederick.  The sky was filled with 23mm, 12.7mm, and 7.62mm ammunition directed at us. We freed the Grenadians from a Marxist coup. Today in Grenada, the 25th of October is known as Thanksgiving Day, a national public holiday, which celebrates the United States helping to free Grenada. I cover Operation URGENT FURY in great detail in "Blasting Through."

Also the replies to that post are fascinating in how much moral repugnance they express towards drinking, which is an attitude I am familiar with growing up Southern Baptist but amused to see outside of that culture

Everyone in Japan remembers the American aircraft carriers and helicopters that flew across the sky during Operation Tomodachi in March 2011. Almost nobody knows about the Americans who crawled across the pitch-black bottom of the freezing ocean so northern Japan would not freeze to death. After the tsunami of March 11, snow was falling across northern Japan. Tens of thousands of survivors in shelters had no electricity and were running out of kerosene for their heaters. Japanese fuel tankers loaded with heating oil were waiting offshore, but they could not dock. Why could the fuel ships not enter the harbors at Hachinohe and Miyako? Because the tsunami had swept thousands of cars, semi-trucks, tangled fishing nets, and crushed houses onto the harbor floor. If a fuel tanker tried to enter, submerged steel wreckage would rip open its hull. And surface cranes could not simply scoop the debris out blindly because heavy fishing nets and steel beams were tangled together on the bottom in thirty-six-degree water thick with black fuel oil and silt. You could not see one inch in front of your face underwater. That was when the U.S. Navy sent in Underwater Construction Team Two and Mobile Diving and Salvage Unit One. Wearing sixty-pound diving helmets and heavy rubber drysuits to keep out the toxic oil and chemical runoff, young American Navy divers stepped off snow-covered piers into the freezing black water. Down on the harbor floor in total darkness, where a single jagged piece of car metal or a shifting truck could trap a diver or slice his air hose, the Americans worked entirely by the touch of their gloved hands. Inch by inch, feeling their way across crushed family cars and twisted steel cables in thirty-six-degree water, they cut the wreckage apart with hydraulic saws and hooked crane cables to hundreds of tons of debris until the shipping channels were clear. When the first Japanese fuel tanker finally glided safely into port bringing heat and light back to the freezing towns, the American divers just washed the black oil off their suits and moved to the next harbor. True allies do not just stand beside you in the sunlight. They dive into the freezing dark where nobody is watching.

So if you ever wonder if older employees can handle new technology, this is what we went through to get TIE Fighter to work in 1994.
Gamers today click "Install," wait a little while, and then hit the "Play Game" button. Technical skill required: zero. Gamers in the 1990s needed a PhD in computer science, mastery of hardware and software configuration, willpower, patience, BIOS knowledge, boot disks, base memory management skills, and insane amounts of trial and error - just to run a single game. Show this to anyone under 35 and they'll think you were a wizard... and maybe you were!
