For more than a thousand years, my Dinka (Jieng) people of South Sudan and other semi-nomadic Nilotic pastoralists have moved with their cattle across the region's vast floodplains, a rhythm of life dictated by the seasonal rains and the rise and fall of the Toch Wetland (Sudd). Cut off by distance, conflict, and geography from the rest of humanity, our cattle-centered way of life has remained largely unchanged for centuries. Until now. That isolation, long a source of protection from the outside world, is beginning to fade. Having returned to film over the last 3-4 years, I can finally share this short film, which explores daily life at my Dinka Bor (Pathuyith) cattle camp. As the modern world edges closer and closer, a friend and I wanted to capture and document a way of life I experienced as a young boy. It is a dying culture suspended between ancient tradition and encroaching change. 7 corners and 48 touches in the box, Liverpool dominated but got 0 shots on target. This Arsenal side has a serious backbone. How things change!

One thing I despise the most in my culture is this normalized modern polygamy. It needs to die, or survive in the fringes at the very least. I find advocates of this backward institution to be ignorant about the essence of being. From a distance, the whole structure looks stable - love and butterflies in the photos. But every kid and wife has needs and wants. Heck, some have dreams and life goals of their own. So if you find yourself stepping up as a provider and keeping multiple of those households afloat, it becomes clear the whole institution is toxic and chaotic, absolute dysfunction! Itโ€™s obvious these men donโ€™t recognize all the suffering is by choice and unnecessary. So stupid!
In South Sudan having one wife is seen as being lazy ๐Ÿ˜ด

If you live in the West, you have to roll cautiously these days. The cost of living has folks on edge and ready to let off some steam at the slightest of provocations. A pointless road rage can get you shot or stabbed.

This is a good analysis of Mbappรฉโ€™s row with China. Not knowing Chairman Mao Zedongโ€™s name is probably the bigger problem in my book. Itโ€™s notable that most of his critics in China have not seen the actual meme or the interview of what he said, itโ€™s all censored. The uproar is from news reports. Something like: โ€˜a French footballer disrespected our founding fatherโ€™.
I know a lot of people in the West are baffled by the Mbappรฉ-Mao storm in China - which in itself shows that Mbappรฉ's ignorance doesn't come out of nowhere... To understand it, here's the best analogy I could think of: imagine the biggest Chinese star in the NBA, with sponsorship deals all over the US. One day he's asked for his favorite meme of himself. He giggles: "the one where they put my face on some guy, I think he was an American slave owner." When the "some guy" in question is George Washington. Whatever you think of the label, you know exactly how that would land in the US: an ungrateful foreigner getting rich off Americans, laughing at the country's founding father in an offensive way - at least to a big share of the population - without even knowing his name. A founding father is the story a nation tells itself about where it comes from. Laugh at him as a foreigner while cashing in on that nation's consumers, and that's not going to go well in any country. The label is also extremely un-nuanced: yes, all important historical figures have their share of darkness and Washington and Mao are no exception. China actually recognizes this: the official line is that he was "70% right and 30% wrong," and the Party's 1981 resolution condemned how his "personal arbitrariness gradually undermined democratic centralism in Party life and the personality cult grew graver and graver" (marxists.org/subject/china/dโ€ฆ) Same for Washington: it's officially acknowledged too. Or at least it was until this year: in January, the National Park Service tore down an exhibit in Philadelphia about the people Washington enslaved there, under a Trump executive order targeting content that "inappropriately disparage[s]" Americans (associationforpublicart.org/โ€ฆ). Which goes to show China isn't uniquely touchy about its founding father...

Raila Odinga International Stadium is a fitting honor. RAO was a consistent statesman.

I can take a stab. 1st pic - Japanese - Tight spaces and expressive trees. 2nd Pic - Korean - the layout and type of pagoda, grey tiles. 3rd Pic - Chinese - open courtyard
Hereโ€™s the real test: Can you tell which one is Japanese, which one is Chinese and which one is Korean?

A sign that a modern country is in complete shambles is when people from that country start flexing random atrocities committed against their neighbors since they have nothing good to say about their current state

Sudanese-style flex aka Twitter โ€˜ownageโ€™. People who see these ugliness against people that are identical to them as some kind of past glory are morally in the pits.

I have other ideas on this supposed solution. People arenโ€™t farming because they donโ€™t know how or donโ€™t want to. I would rather this agricultural potential stays unrealized until the current government dies a natural death. Iโ€™ll bet on the next government to fix property rights, insecurity and empower rural farmers. Commercial farming companies will be another disaster - exploitation. Real sustainable solution has to start from the grassroots. Countries rub by giant agricultural corporations have a name - Banana Republics.

Itโ€™s Friday, 6 am, late October. There is a snowstorm outside (because Prairies!). Just finished brewing my first cup of imported Kenyan coffee for the day. Iโ€™m at my desk clicking away. Things could be better, but at least I donโ€™t have to step outside today.

โ€œMeanwhile the U.S. , they understand the ecosystem. 90% of their investment will go down to 0. But the few that survive will go on to earn them BILLIONS and change the world.โ€ You can extrapolate this to the rests of the world. It explains why all the Tech heavy hitters started in the USA. Risk appetite. American VCs and PEs are happy to throw millions at ideas which they know are 90% likely to fail. Because they know the 10% that survives can be worth billions. Talk of a high stakes gambling game.
Once again the Canadian government FAILS to understand the problem I would know, I founded and ran a tech company for a decade and raised MILLIONS from investors And it was HORRIBLE doing business here Let me explain This isn't a "money issue" This is a regulatory, economic and taxation issue combined with a deep cultural problem Back in 2015 I founded a tech company, using my own money from working in the Alberta oil field We developed our MVP in Montreal and launched our proof of concept right here in the West Island Our first ever investors were our own first clients. We raised $150,000 from them But things got harder when it came time to raise our seed round I met with EVERY SINGLE VC in Montreal. All told us NO Why? Too risky lol... its the very definition of Venture Capital They wanted a pitch deck, projections on 5 years, cashflow, business plan, go-to-market strategy, communication strategy, marketing strategy, Tech reviews, C.V. of founding team, financial disclosure etc We spent more time preparing documents for them than we did scaling our business Worse of all, they all wanted something different and would give contradicting requirements I remember this interaction at the Espace CDPQ, the headquarter for all Venture firms in Montreal ie: Investor: How much do you need Me: $1 Million Investor: So if you only raise $750k what happens? Me: Well we'll adapt XYZ Investor: So then never EVER tell me a fix number. Give me a range. $750K-$1.5M or else you look foolish I went home, reworked the pitch deck The very next day: New investor: How much you need Me: $750K-$1.5M New investor: What... you don't even know your number??? Me: well... yes but what if we raise less or more New Investor: No, you look foolish We said screw it. Approached American Investor Our first was a VC firm out of Houston, Texas Took less than 1 month from initial pitch, to closing. In USD. For more money than what Canadians wanted to offer. Best of all, they understood the fluid nature of a startup. No onerous and rigid plan. No overburdened documentation. Every second wasted on non-operating activities was sucking productive time away from scaling. But Elliot... what about BDC and other AMAZING institutions in Canada We did business with the BDC. a $250,000 loan. Which I had to personally guarantee. Which 25 year old has assets and the balls to guarantee that amount? Very few. It's prohibitive. And reduces capital available to our homegrown companies And this was AFTER MONTHS of explaining to them what we were doing. It was clear the BDC was setup to support traditional brick-and-mortar companies only. Think Manufacturers or Commerces. But a tech startup? They could NOT wrap their heads around it. Canadian banks? Forget it. Outright. Too risky Then I watch fellow startups do the same. And move to the US. Why wouldn't they? In Quebec, I had to pay an extra 15% on top of my payroll as taxes. QPIP, QPP, FSS, CNESST... all to satisfy the government non-stop appetite. Consequences: Well for a startup where every dollar counts, this means lower salaries thus harder to attract top talent (vs American competitors) or I simply hired less staff... thus slowly growth for both my company and the country's economy. But wait it gets worse. Revenue Quebec and CRA both required a plethora of compliance documents filled monthly or quarterly. GST and QST tax fillings, CNESST Salary equity (yes lol) documents, Source deduction documents, RL-1 fillings, Income tax (both QC and CAN), Workplace sexual harassment policy, OQLF policy, CNESST training and certification... the list goes on At least 1 day a month was spent by me and some of my executives preparing and fulfilling these documents. This means we were't scaling our business and instead working for FREE for the government. Then there is the tax burden. Why would top talent want to come here and get taxed at up to 52% marginal rate? While a Miami startup offers higher salary and the State taxes you 0% Finally investor behaviour In Canada... safe. steady return. Great for a Series C. Great for an established companies. No desire for risk. No understanding of the ecosystem. HORRIBLE FOR VENTURE Meanwhile the U.S. , they understand the ecosystem. 90% of their investment will go down to 0. But the few that survive will go on to earn them BILLIONS and change the world. So this new announcement of $1.75Billion won't change the underlying issue that makes us uncompetitive. At best, it will go to startups who will flee to the US the very second the money hits At worse, it will just be another slush fund given to friends of the government and I fear its the latter as usual

21 years ago I named "Reddit" and everyone said it was a horrible name, but I insisted one day people would say "I read it on reddit" and used my CEO-privilege to overrule everyone + kept the name. Now the company twitter account (unbeknownst to them) is making the joke. Heh.
I'd tell you a joke, but you've probably already Reddit.
