What next? 1⃣ HMG should increase resources for the failing Astute-class. With only five vessels operational & none currently deployable, Britain is vulnerable to Russian activity & risks seeing "sovereign" nuclear deterrent dependent on friendly navies' escorts. This cannot continue. 2⃣ Ensure that two Astute-class subs are fully deployable & operational at all times: one actively patrolling the North Sea, the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) Gap, or English Channel to deter increased Russian activity around British waters; a second always patrolling alongside the nuclear deterrent. 3⃣ HMG to fully commit to the Strategic Defence Review & related Defence Investment Plan maximum recommendation for 12 SSN-AUKUS vessels at the earliest opportunity, likely spring Spending Review 2027. 4⃣ MOD should follow the SDR recommendation & announce work on Dreadnought’s successor, commissioning the early definition & requirement-setting phase by end-2027.

A few comments this morning for @LBC on the Defence Secretary's '1,000 days' ready for war remarks. The UK Armed Forces can fight tonight, we just couldn't sustain operations for any length of time. Industry needs demand signals now to rearm and prepare - not in 3 years time.
‘We can do it now… we just can’t sustain it.’ Defence and security expert Robert Clark says Wes Streeting’s aim of being war-ready within 1,000 days is 'not enough time'.

And whatever Britain's Government believes, they are a threat to ours.
The War Department has designated Confucius Institutes as a threat to our national security.

Readiness and combat sustainment are crucial in war as @RobertClark87 points out. The ADF, like the UK Armed Forces, can 'fight tonight' but Australia must develop the means to stay in a high intensity major power protracted war that lasts months or even years. I suspect at the moment, we'd run out of critical munitions within weeks at best, and our vital fuel supplies are largely undefended. A good start would be to expand and accelerate GWEO, beyond GMLRS assembly and PrSM to other munitions, and start investing heavily into mass manufacture of low-cost armed drones, and also invest in sustainable logistics, and resilient and defended infrastructure. C2 must be also defended from both kinetic attack and cyber / counterspace threats. And we need to spend much more on EW and electromagnetic warfare capabilities. And its not just about military readiness, resilience and sustainability - its about building national readiness and resilience too. Not just in anticipation of natural disasters such as bushfires and floods - but in anticipation of protracted high intensity major power war happening in the Indo-Pacific region that would see Australia a combatant alongside our allies and partners. This has to be a whole of nation effort. And we need to do this fast - not in a decade's time - but to be ready for a real threat of such a war emerging within this decade.

It really isn’t worth aspiring to build anything or be financially successful in the U.K. It’s as if the entire system is rigged to incentivise dependence on the State and crush ambition. If they keep persecuting people who create wealth, to quote Thatcher, they will eventually run out of other people’s money.

All wisdom comes from understanding things past. Britain's traditions are uniquely good. If "nostalgia for traditionalism" is now extreme in the eyes of the state, so too is love of country, which will eventually make Britain's existence impossible. @StevenEdginton is doing vital work
EXCLUSIVE: Leaked Home Office counter-terrorism documents link “nostalgia for traditionalism” and fears over immigration, liberalism and multiculturalism to “Christian extremism”. Officials propose working with churches to promote “theological resilience” against the use of Christian teachings to justify hatred or violence. I obtained dozens of pages from RICU’s report on “Christian extremism”. Among the findings: • Images of happy families in wartime, peaceful countryside and classical statues are described as a “hook” towards an extremist worldview. • Tommy Robinson’s rallies and a Christmas carol concert come under scrutiny, alongside Christian fitness groups. • “Bob from Speakers’ Corner” features, despite RICU identifying no extremist content from him. Yet the report acknowledges that the threat of violence from Christian extremists remains “low”. Jeremiah Igunnubole, UK legal counsel for ADF, says the report “suggests an institutional anti-Christian bias has taken hold in the Home Office”. stevenedginton.substack.com/…

Interesting development... Better for GCAP project - at this stage German participation would cause delays & add layers of complexity. Focus now should be on 2027's demonstrator flight, whilst ensuring stable funding & industrial assembly pathways between 🇬🇧 🇮🇹 🇯🇵 (+🇨🇦).
🔴 NEW: German defense ministry officials want Berlin to build its next fighter jet with Sweden and Spain — rather than accept the UK’s offer to join its program, docs show. It sets up a major choice for Chancellor Merz after Germany’s FCAS project with France collapsed. 🧵

"Nothing is more certain than that a general profligacy and corruption of manners make a people ripe for destruction. A good form of government may hold the rotten materials together for some time, but beyond a certain pitch, even the best constitution will be ineffectual, and slavery must ensure." - John Witherspoon, 1776.

In summer our Head of Defence @RobertClark87 provided expert evidence to the National Security Strategy (Joint Committee), for the Committee's inquiry 'Deterrence in an age of Russian aggression'. The gaps in the British ability to ensure military deterrence by denial, and deterrence by punishment against Russian aggression, include: An almost decade-late armoured cavalry programme; insufficient tank fleet; space programme resource gaps; and an untested Hybrid Navy concept that risks leaving Russian aggression around British waters unanswered. Andy Burnham says Russia interfered in Brexit. But when Jacob Rees-Mogg - @Jacob_Rees_Mogg - raised concerns about Russian interference over fracking in 2022, Ed Miliband called it an “absolutely outrageous slur”. Isn’t it interesting how selectively we treat the question of foreign interference! And just for laughs, here’s a video of Miliband from last year warning about the dangers of foreign disinformation in the very same speech in which he condemned the appeasement of Russia and promised to ban fracking, an industry Russian state media and bots had spent years trying to undermine. 🤷‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️
