Today is Gheorghe Popescu's birthday.
He broke through in Romania at Universitatea Craiova, and reached the European Cup semi-finals with Steaua București in 1988. Bobby Robson signed him for PSV Eindhoven in the summer of 1990, and Popescu won back to back Eredivisie titles there before moving to Tottenham after a strong 1994 World Cup with Romania. He won an FA Cup with Spurs and after just one season Barcelona came calling.
That move reunited him with Robson, who made him captain of a squad that included Ronaldo, Pep Guardiola, Hristo Stoichkov and Luis Figo. With Popescu as captain, Barcelona won the Copa del Rey, the Supercopa de España and the 1996-97 Cup Winners' Cup.
When Robson left and Louis van Gaal took over in the summer of 1997, Popescu's role was played out and he moved to Galatasaray. There he won the club's first ever European trophy. In the 2000 UEFA Cup final against Arsenal in Copenhagen, the match finished goalless after extra time, and Popescu stepped up to convert the decisive penalty in the shootout.
He now runs his own football school in his hometown of Craiova, and remains connected to the Romanian game today as owner and president of Farul Constanța, with his nephew, Hagi's son Ianis, carrying the family name into the current generation.

A Dutch champion with Feyenoord in 83/84, the 6ft 4in centre-back - who turns 7️⃣0️⃣ today - switched to PSV after Mexico.
Usually content to play the defensive rock as the likes of Ronald Koeman advanced forward, Nielsen had his moment of glory as one of the shoot-out heroes in the 1988 European Cup final against Benfica.
A first choice for club and country throughout the 80s and popular for his down-to-earth personality, Nielsen returned to Denmark in 1990 after falling out with PSV boss Guus Hiddink.
Having started out as a plumber, he returned to the trade in the 90s and retains little interest in football.

Almost 34 by the start of the World Cup, the 5ft 4in midfield maestro rolled back the years with a pinpoint chipped pass for Luis Fernández's equaliser against the USSR, although he struggled in Mexico's heat and altitude.
Giresse made his France debut in 1974, but it was not until the early 1980s that he became established in the side. A master at dictating the tempo of a game, he was France's Footballer of the Year three times and runner-up in the 1982 Ballon d'Or.
He remains Bordeaux's all-time leading scorer with 182 goals and has made more Ligue 1 appearances (586) than any other outfield player.
