NOW WHAT? The election results are sinking in and attention is turning to what comes next. Voters rejected mass deportations and are demanding a reset on immigration policy. Congress and the White House must pass commonsense immigration and workforce solutions in the lame-duck session. Read the full memo we sent to Congress and the President last night: ow.ly/m5wV5103VSL

The federal administration’s termination of Temporary Protected Status for Haitians is putting families across our Eastern Shore in an impossible position. These are parents, caregivers to our seniors, and poultry farm workers who help keep our communities running. Many have American children, who now face the prospect of separation from their families. Earlier this summer, I announced funding for immigration legal services to help these families understand their rights and legal options. You can learn more here: railsmd.org/

A new report out from ABIC member the @TXRestaurants found that 36% of operators lost employees due to immigration enforcement, while 28% saw fewer applicants or accepted offers. “That tells us that a really sizable portion of Texas restaurants are feeling one or more impacts because of our immigration enforcement activities," said Kelsey Erickson Streufert, Chief Public Affairs Officer for the Texas Restaurant Association. The awards are given by the Federation of United Mexicans in Utah to honor people for their work with the Hispanic and immigrant communities in the state. The focus is to "keep families together and (to) try to get the Trump administration to legalize folks that have been here a long time," Worsley said at the event. USA Today reported on the economic impacts of the end of TPS for Haitians, noting that economists say “deporting immigrant workers does not lift wages or provide meaningful benefits to American workers. In fact, they said, eliminating the TPS program could result in the loss of more than 600,000 American jobs in four years." ABIC CEO Rebecca Shi was interviewed and quoted: ow.ly/qlFb50Zv0jf

"Removing TPS for approximately 330,000 Haitians and 6,000 Syrians is fundamentally a humanitarian issue...But it will also have a dramatic economic effect within the United States, as the loss of workers and consumers will resonate in communities of all sizes throughout the country," write The New Republic. As we celebrate the United States' 250th birthday, remember America's story has always been an immigrant story. Immigrants signed the Declaration of Independence, they laid the tracks of the Transcontinental Railroad, they raised the towers of the Brooklyn Bridge, they built factories, farms, and businesses that grew into the backbone of the American economy. They've served in the U.S. military in every American war since the Revolution, putting on the uniform for a country they chose. That story continues. Today, immigrants are the nurses and doctors and caregivers holding our healthcare system together. They're the visionaries and founders driving American tech forward. They're the builders on construction sites, the producers of so much of Americans' food. 250 years of building, growing, and defending this nation: that's the story of immigrants in America. It's not just our history. It's our present, and the key to our shared, prosperous future.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine issued the following statement on the Supreme Court of the United States' decision in Mullin v. Doe, regarding Temporary Protected Status (TPS): "Today, the United States Supreme Court issued its ruling allowing Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to be canceled or expire.    "Today’s decision is a legal decision.  As I have stated in the past, the policy to remove these individuals from this country is a mistake. "As a result of today’s ruling, the over 10,000 Haitians who have been living in Ohio (mostly in the Springfield area) legally through TPS will now be here illegally and will be subject to immediate deportation. This also means that while these Haitians were working and contributing to our community and economy yesterday, today it is now illegal to employ them. "The situation in Haiti could hardly be much worse.  The violent gangs run most of the country.  The government barely functions.  And, the economy is in shambles. "Further, our federal government has an advisory against traveling to Haiti, and our Federal Aviation Administration prohibits U.S. carriers from flying there because of the danger to planes of being shot at by the gangs.  "But, more importantly, changing the immigration status of these individuals is not in the best interest of the United States nor Ohio."

Big news for the DIGNITY Act. The National Restaurant Association @RestaurantsAct has officially endorsed the legislation, joining a growing coalition of employers, faith leaders, families, and advocates demanding serious immigration reform. Their message is clear: America cannot compete in the 21st century with a 20th-century immigration system. The people who feed America, employ America, and power our economy have spoken. It's time for Congress to listen.
