Things I Wish Every Nigerian Building a House Knew.
These are lessons people often learn after spending money or making costly mistakes.
1) Your neighbour's foundation may not be suitable for your land.
2) Architectural drawings alone are not enough for proper construction.
3) Cheap blocks can cost you more in the long run.
4) More cement does not automatically mean stronger concrete.
5) Not every crack means structural failure, but every unusual crack deserves investigation.
6) You need to inspect reinforcement before concrete is poured.
7) Waterproofing should be considered before water starts entering your building.
8) Good drainage is part of good construction, not an afterthought.
9) Paint can make a building look beautiful without correcting poor workmanship.
10) Proper supervision can save you from expensive corrections.

The course I taught today, Advanced Construction Cost Studies and Commercial Management encompasses virtually every aspect of Quantity Surveying, except the preparation of taking-off measurements.
From build up rates, bill preparation and pricing to bidding, tendering, estimating, cost management, feasibility studies, subcontracting, contract administration, commercial management, and even the introduction to Quantity Surveying software, the course covers a broad range of professional practice.
While studying the course content and introducing the various topics to my students, I found myself getting increasingly excited. It was genuinely enjoyable explaining the scope of the course and exploring how the different aspects of Quantity Surveying come together in practice.
I realized I cannot approach this course with the same level of preparation I give some of my other courses. I have to give it 100% of my attention and prepare extensively to ensure they get the best out of it.
