Excellent regulatory update in the UK regarding #antidepressants. The new measures focus on ensuring patients are fully informed about both the risks of suicidal thoughts and behaviors and the risks of persistent sexual dysfunction (#PSSD) before starting treatment. Clear, transparent risk communication is vital for true informed consent in #mentalhealth care. xitter.cf/MHRAgovuk/status/21106… @MHRAgovuk
The MHRA is introducing a series of new measures to strengthen how risks associated with antidepressant medicines are communicated to patients, carers and healthcare professionals. Read the full drug safety update here: brnw.ch/21x6qlr

We applaud the UK’s MHRA for implementing these long-overdue measures to inform patients of the risks of suicidality when initiating antidepressant treatment or adjusting dosages, as well as the risk of persistent sexual dysfunction. We urge the U.S. @FDA to follow suit and, alongside other @HHSGov agencies, prioritize helping those who have already been harm. Years-long sufferers of PSSD @PSSDNetwork and protracted withdrawal deserve acknowledgment, answers, and, most importantly, effective treatments.

Patients often wonder what they can do to help bring safer deprescribing. All should report their adverse drug reactions and problems deprescribing to FDA via Medwatch Reporting. FDA is taking them seriously, reading them, and contacting patients. See link in comments below.

NPR @NPR Pulse program is running a segment on Quitting Antidepressants this weekend following the experience of Erica Gerard. I think the major problem for people who want to suppress the harms of these drugs is that 1 in 6 journalists, politicians, doctors, car mechanics, schoolteachers are on these drugs and many will have tried to stop them and encountered grave difficulties and these people talk to their friends, families and audience and so it is just a matter of time before more people catch on that 8 week studies that minimise harms do not capture what is happening to long-term users. It would be better to work with patient groups to help manage this harm rather than deny it - it will only make the problem bigger and further erode trust and faith from the public in psychiatric institutions.

Even Tyler Black has adopted gradual (exponential?) tapering over months.
I am creating a tapering / deprescribing guide online (will be free forever & collect no data). if you are a clinician or someone with interest in tapering generally, send me a DM and i'll include you on the beta. i never want anyone to have to pay someone for this information

Unprecedented suicidal or violent thoughts are NOT a normal adjustment phase when starting, switching, or discontinuing psychiatric drugs. It is a dangerous sign of an adverse drug reaction.
𝐏𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐭: "I’m having really frightening thoughts… my mind won’t slow down. I wasn’t suicidal until I started this medication." 𝐃𝐨𝐜𝐭𝐨𝐫: "That’s a normal adjustment phase. It can take about six weeks to settle. Let’s increase your dose in the meantime." #CouldItBeMyMeds #AkathisiaAwareness #KnowTheRisks #SuicidePrevention #StephensVoice #YourVoice

Serious misinformation from #LindsayClancy’s prescribing doctor, who is now being sued. Abruptly stopping Zoloft, even 50 mg after short-term use,can carry serious risks. Everyone reacts differently to medications. Competent, knowledgeable medical care matters.#LindsayClancyTrial
Abruptly stopping 50 mg of sertraline (Zoloft) can carry serious, life-threatening risks. According to the literature, at this dose, an estimated 74–85% of serotonin transporters in the brain remain occupied, meaning 50 mg is far from a small dose in terms of its pharmacologic effect. Withdrawal is likely to occur after abrupt discontinuation, especially among long-term users. Many people who have experienced severe and protracted SSRI withdrawal injuries report being harmed even after tapering from 50 mg using conventional linear tapering schedules. Dr. Jennifer Tufts, who was Lindsay Clancy’s prescribing psychiatrist leading up to the unthinkable tragedy, told Ms. Clancy’s defense attorney, the jurors, and the American public that it is okay to abruptly stop 50 mg of Zoloft. Please do not abruptly stop an antidepressant. Tapering should be individualized, with gradual, often hyperbolic dose reductions that become progressively smaller as the dose decreases. For many, this is a months- or years-long process. Our deepest condolences go out to the entire Clancy family.

Aug 3, 2026 – Harvard psychiatrist is asked in Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial how SSRIs work. Her answer essentially: depressed people lack serotonin in the brain, and SSRIs block its reuptake so there’s more available. Full quote: “[Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. What does that mean?] So oftentimes in depression patients are kind of lacking serotonin in the spaces in their brain… a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor prevents serotonin being kind of sucked back into the cell, so it allows for serotonin to be more available.” Psychiatrists frequently suggest that the chemical imbalance theory of depression has been abandoned. Yet, when asked to testify in court, that is pretty much the extent of our explanation. No disrespect to Dr. Shah, she said what many providers would. Full video in the comments.

Calling all Black and Hispanic individuals, and anyone living in the Los Angeles area, with lived experience of severe antidepressant withdrawal. The Antidepressant Coalition for Education (ACE) is seeking American participants for an upcoming public service announcement. We are especially encouraging Black and Hispanic individuals to apply as we work to ensure diverse representation among those sharing their stories. We also welcome applicants of all racial and ethnic backgrounds who live in the Los Angeles area. Filming will take place in Los Angeles, so preference will be given to LA-area residents or those who are able to cover their own travel expenses. For participants traveling from outside the area, a stipend of up to $500 may be available to help offset travel costs. If you believe you’d be a good fit and are willing to share your antidepressant withdrawal story on camera, please email [email protected] with the subject line: PSA Casting. Thank you to everyone who has already shared your story for this project. With your permission, we hope to feature these stories on a dedicated page of the ACE website in the near future, helping others better understand the realities of antidepressant withdrawal through lived experience.

If a provider thinks someone experiencing akathisia, memory loss, and cognitive processing issues are signs of a generalized anxiety disorder relapse due to antidepressant discontinuation, I don’t think they should be managing psychiatric medications.

This week, I returned to the doctor who, four years ago, tapered me using a conventional, linear taper schedule. All this time, I’ve fantasized about this meeting, daydreaming about all the clever things I would say when I finally saw him again. I would bob my head and wag my finger, shaming him for his recklessness and how it derailed not just my life, but my spouse’s and children’s. In the depths of the dark, inhumane suffering that is severe and protracted antidepressant withdrawal, I would sometimes conjure up this fantasy as a distraction. I would be the hero and he would be the villain. Protagonist and antagonist, my story would be complete with this ending of vindication. As much as I want to hate him for upending my life, I found him to be exactly as Mark describes in his recent Substack: “naively ignorant.” I also found myself deeply sympathizing with the man as he apologized, stuttering nervously, and, I’m sure, fearful of possible recourse. As a friend once said, we shouldn’t be upset with doctors for not knowing. We should be upset with them once we’ve told them and they refuse to learn. In the end, he was open to receiving resources on safer tapering and information on serious withdrawal. I highly recommend Mark’s article to better understand why doctors don’t see, understand, or even know about serious withdrawal.
I wrote a blog on "Why Doctors Don’t See Withdrawal: Severe antidepressant withdrawal is often hidden in plain sight. Here's why most clinicians don't recognise it – and why I wouldn't have either until it happened to me." Link below. Please re-tweet.
