That is the opening salvo of If China Attacks, the English edition of my book Wenn China angreift, which @HurstPublishers will publish in March 2027. The German original came out with @CHBeckLiteratur in March 2026 and became an instant bestseller. I wrote the book as a warning and not as a forecast. Red teaming and counterfactual history let us see what the West is not yet prepared for, and the book ends with an argument that there is still time to deter Beijing, including through open military support for Taiwan. @campbellclaret recommended it on The Rest Is Politics, which is part of why an English edition now exists. Pre-order link in the first comment. #Taiwan #China #Geopolitics #IfChinaAttacks

Mbappé, La Liga, and the Next China That’s Still China I recently came across a book by two @McKinsey partners, The Next China Is Still China. I spend hours every day reading and listening to news and research about China. So I went on YouTube and found a book talk by one of the authors, Joe Ngai, chairman of McKinsey Greater China. youtu.be/YNKTElHFOa0?is… Much of what he says about China’s manufacturing prowess is valid and convincing. But his advice to German companies is troubling: “If I were in Germany, I would think about China as part of my strength, not my enemy.” He goes further, urging German companies to make China “part of your ecosystem” and “partner with Chinese companies in order to make yourself more competitive.” But his entire argument misses the bigger picture: Would the world actually be a better place if China dominated global manufacturing and became an indispensable part of global supply chains? That was the day before yesterday. Yesterday, I came across this extraordinary story. time.com/article/2026/1… French football superstar @KMbappe Kylian Mbappé had apparently committed an unforgivable crime: laughing at an internet meme depicting him as Mao Zedong, whom he casually referred to as a Chinese dictator. Outrage swept Chinese social media. Sponsors dumped him. Advertisements disappeared. Retailers practically had to scissor Mbappé’s face off every water bottle he graced overnight. Chinese state television suspended broadcasts of Spain’s La Liga matches. Mbappé apologized. In three languages, no less. @LaLiga apologized too. Chinese netizens then demanded that @realmadrid apologize. Today, Real Madrid duly obliged. And China still hasn’t decided when Spanish football can return to its television screens. All because someone unwittingly called Mao a dictator. Quite an impressive demonstration of China’s global influence. One French footballer’s joke, and an entire Spanish football league is brought to its knees. Perhaps this is the missing chapter in Ngai’s book: China’s manufacturing prowess may be world-class, but its political absurdities come as part of the package. The next China is still China. That may precisely be the problem.

Saying the truth and then cowardly taking a step back and apologies because Chinese sponsors won't sponsor you anymore... Wow, what a hero... not!

Unfortunately, countries companies and individuals much more influential than Mbappé have backed down to China before (Hollywood did that too). That’s how the CCP and Xi’s China have clawed their way to the top.

Mbappé's apology sends the wrong signal. Calling Mao a dictator is a historical judgement, not an insult to the Chinese people. By conflating the two, he adopts the Party's framing. Apologising will only deepen self-censorship on anything touching 'official China'.

Well said Andreas. Judging Mao is just history. Insulting the Chinese people is something else, and Beijing always works hardest to erase that line. So predictable.

Let me share this again here: China's ambassador to France (whose persona you probably know more about) taking himself for the journalists' master ("Stop!")... and qualifying millions of victims as "bla-bla". xitter.cf/cyprien_ronze/status/2…

Mao was a brutal dictator. And one of the worst mass murderers of human history. By numbers of people killed, Mao even outcompeted Hitler and Stalin. Would be horrible if people retweeted this and feelings of all Chinese Communist Party members would get hurt by this very simple historical truth.

A despicable act of cowardice. Mbappe apologises for calling Mao a dictator, claiming that his words 'hurt many people in China.' His servility mocks the memory of the tens of millions of Mao's victims and reaffirms the central tenet of CCP propaganda - the unity of the regime and the peoples it oppresses.

Mao Zedong is under any single social metric a dictator. Not a single popular election, single government party and lifetime leadership. Not even taking into account the millions of deaths under his reign. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mao_Zedong
