Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah was fined LE3 million by the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, which convicted her on charges of managing an unlicensed website, issuing an order for the website’s closure. Attalah was taken into custody after the issue of the ruling.
Tuesday’s session at the ninth circuit of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, presided over by judge Mohamed Mubarak, was temporarily suspended for deliberations after Attalah’s defense counsel requested time to review the case file.
After the court returned from deliberations, the judge ordered the courtroom cleared of everyone except Attalah and her defense counsel, the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights’ executive director Hossam Bahgat, who was also present, told Mada Masr. The room then filled with plainclothes officers and guards, with a National Security Agency officer in attendance, he added.
The presiding judge and a Supreme State Security Prosecution representative returned to the session and the judge announced that the court has decided to stand by its rejection of all the procedural arguments presented by the defense, including requests to bring in any documentation or hear any witnesses.
The judge then asked the defense team to present its plea. The counsel insisted that it would not submit a plea as long as its requests were unanswered by the court.
The judge then abruptly asked for a lawyer unknown to any member of the defense counsel to be brought in, “in a move that astonished all those present,” said Bahgat, and announced that the court decided to appoint a lawyer for Attalah.
At that point, all members of the defense counsel cried out to reject the court’s appointment of a lawyer when the eight chosen lawyers were present. Attalah herself spoke to say she did not accept the court-appointed lawyer acting on her behalf, an objection the judge refused to have recorded in the session’s minutes.
"In an even more shocking move,” said Bahgat, the judge himself began to log down the requests of the court-appointed lawyer, without the lawyer having said a word. The judge then read out the conviction amid shouts and protests from the defense counsel.
The judge sentenced Attalah to the maximum possible penalty: a LE3 million fine, the closure of Mada Masr’s website and the confiscation of its property.
Security personnel then surrounded Attalah, lifted her off the ground and took her out of the courtroom, where she remains in custody in the courthouse.

Scandaleux !

I've come back to Egypt again & again, because when this region & our world have faced difficult moments, Egypt has consistently been a pillar of multilateralism, working to open space for diplomacy.
At at a time when divisions are deepening, it's critical to keep the channels of diplomacy open.

There are no words—defense lawyers denied adequate time to review case files, a judge refusing to hear witnesses or review documents, police officers filling the room, the court appointing @Linaattalah a lawyer AGAINST her will and despite her 8-person legal team.
For shame.

See the English translation below

Another 15 Days Behind Bars
No Questioning. No Evidence. No Court Appearance.
Detention of Six Matsadaash Journalists Extended in Virtual Hearing
In a further escalation against the independent investigative journalism and fact-checking platform Matsadaash, Egypt’s Supreme State Security Prosecution has ordered the detention of the platform’s six journalists, who have been held for nearly a month, to be extended for another 15 days pending investigation.
The journalists were not physically present at Tuesday’s detention renewal hearing. Instead, they appeared remotely from Badr Prison, where they remain detained. Their detention was extended without any new questioning, without being asked to respond to the accusations against them, and without being presented with any evidence to substantiate those allegations.
Since their arrest in September, prosecutors have yet to present any evidence during investigative hearings to support allegations of “foreign funding,” “membership in a terrorist organization,” or “holding organizational meetings with Muslim Brotherhood leaders,” as previously outlined in a statement issued by the prosecution.
During Tuesday’s hearing, the Matsadaash journalists complained that they had been prohibited from communicating or speaking with other prisoners and denied access to books and novels that are otherwise permitted inside the prison. They also reported that their families had been prevented from bringing them winter clothing during visits, while the journalists themselves were barred from purchasing such clothing inside the prison—a restriction not imposed on other detainees.
We demand the immediate release of all six Matsadaash journalists, an end to the legal proceedings that continue to prolong their detention without clear legal justification, and full guarantees of their rights while in custody, including the ability to communicate with others and access books, clothing, and other basic necessities.
We hold the Egyptian authorities fully responsible for the journalists’ safety and their continued detention. We call on the relevant authorities to explain the legal basis for keeping them behind bars and to disclose any evidence supporting the accusations against them, if such evidence exists.
The decision to extend their detention came approximately two hours after a separate ruling ordering the closure of the independent news outlet Mada Masr, the detention of its editor-in-chief, Lina Attalah, and the imposition of a fine of EGP 3 million.
These developments, unfolding within hours of each other, raise growing concerns about an intensifying crackdown on independent journalism in Egypt and serious questions about the authorities’ compliance with constitutional and legal protections for press freedom.
Journalism is not a crime. And it never will be.

The decision to float after avoiding it for a decade was the least bad option & avoids burning hard currency reserves in a futile fight against inflation. But Egypt's economy is weak & structural problems remain unresolved. The pound will depreciate indefinitely until they are🧵
The Egyptian Pound is falling. That's not a sign of weakness, but a sign of good policy. Oil prices are spiking as fears of another hot war build, so the weaker Pound is offsetting all of that. Egypt deserves huge kudos for letting the Pound float...

On this Israeli election day, I’d recommend reading this extraordinary @haaretzcom interview with billionaire Ronald Lauder, president of the World Jewish Congress and once one of Benjamin Netanyahu’s closest confidants.
One of Lauder’s most striking conclusions: “I realized at the end of the day that Israel really didn't want peace, but they wanted dominance.”
This is coming from someone who helped launch Netanyahu’s political career, introduced him to powerful figures in American politics and media, and secretly negotiated with Hafez al-Assad and Rafik Hariri on his behalf in the late 1990s.
In one of the interview’s biggest revelations, Lauder says Netanyahu agreed to a comprehensive peace deal with Syria and Lebanon, including withdrawal from the Golan Heights, but ultimately refused to sign it for political reasons.
“He chose politics over peace. He put his political future before the deal.”
Now 82, Lauder describes his profound disillusionment with Israel’s direction. After decades of supporting Israeli and Jewish institutions, he has sold his Tel Aviv apartment, given away his Be’er Sheva property, and says he has no intention of returning to Israel.
He warns that Netanyahu’s dependence on figures like Ben-Gvir and Smotrich is damaging Israel, alienating diaspora Jews and eroding support in Washington.
The interview is also full of fascinating details about Lauder’s role in Netanyahu’s political rise. The two became close friends in the 1980s, when Netanyahu was Israel’s ambassador to the UN, speaking almost daily at times.
Lauder says he introduced Netanyahu to speech coach Lilyan Wilder to improve his public speaking and, crucially, to Republican strategist Arthur Finkelstein, who would become instrumental in Netanyahu’s electoral success.
When Netanyahu left New York to pursue a political career in Israel, Lauder threw him a farewell party attended by some of the most influential figures in American media and politics, including Rupert Murdoch and the head of the New York Times.
Lauder recalls opening doors for Netanyahu and helping him cultivate the relationships that would underpin his rise to power.
What makes this interview so revealing is that Lauder is no longtime critic of Israel. He had been a committed Zionist, a Republican power broker, and a man who spent decades financing Jewish institutions, cultivating relationships with Arab leaders, and pursuing diplomatic openings on Israel’s behalf.
A fascinating read 👇

The court has suspended the session in which Mada Masr Editor-in-Chief Lina Attalah’s first hearing on charges of managing an unlicensed website is taking place, with proceedings set to resume later today.
The session’s suspension came after the judge had requested during proceedings that the defense counsel review the case file while the session was ongoing. The counsel refused the request, asking that they be given sufficient time to review the case documents. The judge repeated his request that they review the case file during the session, saying that “the case is simple” and that the charge is the straightforward question of managing a website without a license.
The session is being held at the ninth circuit of the New Cairo Misdemeanor Court, presided over by judge Mohamed Mubarak.
At the start of the session, after the judge presented to Attalah the Supreme State Security Prosecution’s charges, he asked the editor-in-chief if the website was unlicensed at the time of the prosecution’s investigations on October 21. She responded by stressing that she had applied for a license and never received a response.
Before the session began, journalists present at the courthouse were barred from entering to attend the trial, among them Iman Ouf, the Journalists Syndicate’s Freedoms Committee head. Court security asked the journalists gathered outside to hand over their syndicate membership cards, saying the presiding judge wanted to check on those present “name by name.” They later returned the cards without letting anyone in.
Mada Masr’s defense lawyers had asked the judge for full access to evidence in the case, including the facts of the licensing procedures and related notifications, details of the charges Attalah is accused of and the time period over which it is alleged that the crime took place, as well as access to all documentation regarding Mada Masr’s licensing application held by the Supreme Media Regulatory Council.

Significant even brave intervention by Oman foreign minister @badralbusaidi at Cambridge calling for the Gulf States to form a non-aggression pact with Iran and Iraq. Says US should no longer be primary provider of security in region, adding external partners have imposed the most damaging of the priorities - "the requirement that Iran be excluded. Not just excluded. Worse. Positioned as the threat against which regional security had to be organised."
He argues "What holds us back is that issues which ought to be handled at a regional level by the states of the Gulf themselves, are made more complex, more intractable and sometimes simply impossible to resolve because the region's security arrangements are insufficiently developed.
"And they are insufficiently developed because they have relied for too long on the involvement of external powers.
"The complications which stand in the way of successful resolutions to both the Iranian nuclear issue and the question of free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz are simply the latest effects of an unstable combination of power projection and dependency in the Gulf.
"In other words, the nuclear issue and the Hormuz issue are both impossible to resolve because external powers continue to define the terms of engagement, while regional powers are unable to take collective responsibility for making their own security arrangements and reach a consensus on them".
Says Iran "has for nearly half a century been systematically excluded from playing any meaningful role in the security arrangements of the region.
"An exclusion with profoundly negative consequences, not just for Iran, but for the region as a whole".
He says "Instead of a genuine security structure designed to maintain stable relations between the eight states of the Gulf, an unstable regional system has been constructed on the entirely false perception that there is a fundamental regional antagonism between Iran and the Arab states of the Gulf.
"There is no such fundamental antagonism. There are problems, yes, of course. But the plain fact is that Arabs and Persians have lived in peace around the Gulf for centuries. It’s not a matter of whether you’re friendly or hostile to Iran.
"Today, Persia is a fact, 93 million people and three thousand years of history. Roughly half of the Gulf littoral.
"Any Gulf security architecture that doesn’t include them is inherently unstable. It’s structurally unsound. And recent events expose the terrible cost of allowing the false perception of antagonism and exclusion."
"It is us, in the Gulf, who ultimately bear the responsibility for devising, developing and implementing a new regional security structure.
The time has come when it no longer makes sense just to blame everyone else.
We need to begin a new regional dialogue on Gulf security, and we need to do so before other solutions are imposed on the region which would effectively consolidate the pattern of dependency and exclusion for which we urgently need to find an alternative.
What is needed, instead, is a new and inclusive framework, involving all eight Gulf littoral states".
