To be more specific, design, unlike many similar disciplines: - has no generally agreed upon practices, processes, or responsibilities - has no accreditation or licensure - has no widely or consistently implemented apprenticeship or internship fields - is often taught by instructors who are not practicing, or are woefully behind the industry - is often a part of more theoretical rather than applied college (e.g. Art) - has a large fraction of industry practitioners without formal education or ties to education institutions - is, as a specialization, extremely young To name a few.

A lot of ICs misunderstand innovation at large companies. It happens through massive investment, not individual creativity (not bottoms-up). Your shot to participate in innovation is joining the investment and optimizing locally within it.

Insecure strategists control what the idea should be. Confident strategists clarify what the idea should do.

“UX research” doesn’t mean looking at other interfaces to find ideas. It means talking to users to find problems.

Trust Yourself Dept: Get in the habit of trying (and failing) to apply what you learn about #UX, #UI, #ProductDesign and #SoftwareDevelopment — instead of looking for a solution that perfectly mirrors your scenario. (hint: you won't find one.) DON'T look to other sites or apps for inspiration — all you will find is someone else's solution to someone else's problem. DO work to get a sense of what people are used to and expect — but don't mimic. Use what you see as a starting point for iteration. Try something, anything. Try, test, repeat. DON’T be afraid to get it wrong. You will, and you SHOULD. In order to design and deliver something that’s truly useful, usable and valuable, there is no other way.

Also any culture you join will *change you*. We internalize the norms and values of the group we join and identify with. If you join a team characterized by excellence, growth, and social support you will internalize those values and embed them in the groups you lead.
If you’re choosing a research group to join, pay just as much - if not more - attention to the culture and mentoring style in the group than the research. You can succeed in lots of research areas or projects, but it’s tough to succeed in an unsupportive environment.

Creative people: "try everything." Disciplined people: "consistency is growth." Experienced people: "think simpler." Analytical people: "think in systems." Scientific people: "assume you're wrong." Enterprising people: "default to action!" They're all right.
