Last week Stripe launched Link Balance for agents. There's been many takes explaining its details, but I think most are missing the forest for the trees. In this article I explain Stripe's real goal: taking over Visa and MC as the World's payment network.

SOct 20 was the B2B day: Visa's live invoice pilot with BILL and Billtrust on Trusted Agent Protocol, and Mastercard Agent Pay for Machines going early access on x402. The card networks are now on 51 of the 228 sourced data points on our grid. agentpaytracker.xyz
During @money2020, agent payments found their market: the finance team. On 20 and 21 October, @Visa launched a live pilot, @Mastercard opened early access to Agent Pay for Machines and @stripe announced Treasury for agents. All three serve businesses. 💳 @Mastercard's release puts it plainly: A business gives an agent a job and a spending limit. Controllers and CFOs already work that way. 💳 @Visa's pilot runs between @billcom buyers and @billtrust suppliers. A business sits at each end of every payment. Visa's Nelsen says the team is testing how identity, payment controls and transaction visibility can make that model work. 💳 Many new startups are one person. In Q2, 63% formed through Stripe Atlas had a solo founder. Stripe's new product lets those founders have an agent check balances, pay invoices, move funds and convert currencies. The consumer side is live too. @Google's Lisa Yokoyama said in Las Vegas: "We launched UCP-enabled checkout flows through a lot of popular retailers and merchants across the US." Kudos to the BILL and @Billtrust teams for testing this with real suppliers. I expect agent volume to appear in accounts payable real soon.
