I always intended Stratechery to have a sponsorship component; it just took me 12 years to get back to it. That I could do so with the company that made the subscription business possible makes me so happy. There is nothing better than endorsing a product you whole-heartedly believe in.

.@MercedesAMGF1 is the leading F1 team and the best business in the sport. Toto Wolff is the only owner-principal. I was excited to sit him down and understand his business background, how they run engineering under the constantly-changing rules, his views on the industry, and how he's preparing for succession. 00:00:22 Spotting driver talent 00:06:24 Engineering and team selection 00:09:11 The F1 cost cap 00:25:21 Toto’s early investing career 00:38:15 Running Mercedes as an owner 00:46:47 Why F1 team values exploded 01:08:24 Succession planning

.@willob on how Guinness gave us Student’s t-test “I studied math in college, and one of the tests from that is the Student’s t-test. This is how you derive either the standard deviation if you know the mean, or the mean if you know the standard deviation from a small sample, less than 30. This was a problem at Guinness because one of the biggest predeterminants of the quality of a pint of Guinness is the amount of lipids or fats in hops. So, they were having to take up hundreds of hops to see is this a high-quality batch or not? And they were losing a few percent per batch. And that means a lot when you’re in the high-volume, low-margin food-and-beverage industry. So William Sealy Gosset had to publish under a pseudonym. That's why it's called the Student's t-test.”

.@willob of @ulyssesinc joins @sacca and me for a pint to discuss how subsea robotics is unlocking Earth’s last frontier. We talk about the physical constraints of operating 1,500 meters underwater, why seagrass holds 20% of the ocean’s carbon, how green tape hinders environmental restoration, and why hard tech startups are verticalising hardware manufacturing. (Plus, Will's interesting Guinness history facts.)

.@finkd on @alexandr_wang leading Meta Superintelligence Labs “I talked to all the leaders of all the labs, all the heads of research, and I was like, no, Alex is the guy. He’s the fucking guy. We’re going to be able to pull together a team and recruit the people we need. We need the kind of strategic clarity that he has, the extreme focus on talent density, and the clarity of communicating the vision.” “Alex and I had spent a bunch of time talking over the years, and I was always very impressed by how he thought about things strategically. He was running this very operational data business, but it always felt to me like he was the sharpest entrepreneur of his generation of the ones I’d had a chance to meet.”

“To operate a gigawatt cluster for a year, if you're talking about building the CapEx it's probably closer to, you pay for it upfront, so it's probably $50 or $60 billion. But then that's just one cluster for one part of training.” “I actually think some of the more complicated questions that we had were, all right, so we're training this model and we know we want to train the model because this is key, but how much product demand do we think we're going to have?” “There was a moment where a bunch of people were like maybe we should just be a little more conservative. And it's like, no, we're doing this. We're going to make it work.” “If AI works overall, plenty of other people want our compute. So they're willing to pay if the cost is whatever, $15 billion a gigawatt, we could get a lot more for that. So I think that in order for it not to work out, it's not just that we have to fail, AI overall has to fail.” “And then even if that happens, we still have all these other uses to productively use compute. So in the grand scheme of things, we were definitely building out this compute for inference ahead of knowing that the product was going to be ready.” @finkd @alexandr_wang
