I’m a public defender. That’s it. I lead and champion our clients and the defenders who work tirelessly for them. That is it. And for them, clients and the incredible #phillydefenders who do this hard but critical work, I am unwavering.

So grateful for your many years of leadership, and for giving me my first opportunity as a summer intern @LawyersComm nearly 25 years ago! – at North Carolina, USA
Congratulations @DamonTHewitt on your first anniversary of leading @LawyersComm with integrity, persistence and a spirit of collaboration. I love hearing praise about you from so many other racial justice leaders. As one of your many predecessors, I am Proud of your leadership!

#OTD in 1963, President Kennedy assembled a group of lawyers who would fight discrimination inside and outside the courtroom. The world would soon know this group as the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Today, we continue our mission of securing democracy for all.

The leaked draft Dobbs opinion outrageously equates Roe with Plessy as being "egregiously wrong from the start." Asian Americans should also be outraged that the leaked draft equates Roe with Korematsu. Korematsu should not be misused in this way.

Got up close & personal @ the White House today for the signing of the Executive Order on policing. This is a floor—not a ceiling—on much more to come. Thanks to @POTUS and @VP for taking action after the effort was sabotaged in Congress. #policeaccountabilty

#OTD in 2017, Lt Richard Collins III, days away from graduating from Bowie State University, was murdered by a white supremacist on the UMD campus.
Monday, @UofMaryland dedicated a plaza to Collins as a permanent reminder of the senseless killing and efforts to stamp out hatred.

In this @washingtonpost article I call the question everyone should be asking. What is it going to take to focus on #WhiteSupremacy and #AntiBlackRacism as chief threats to democracy? We'll keep pushing and also partnering w/federal officials for justice in #BuffaloNY and beyond.

Social media companies and tech giants must acknowledge and confront the various ways that their platforms are helping to organize, mobilize, and energize white supremacist violence against communities of color.
Failure to act is complicity, and silence is violence.

Remember - the deadly racist violence in #Buffalo is not an anomaly. It's just the current chapter in the same white supremacist playbook that continues to defend the Jan. 6th Insurrection, the Charlottesville riot, and confederate monuments. nytimes.com/live/2022/05/14/…

Sick to my stomach. Angry to tears. The #Buffalo shooting is yet another example of weaponized racism. My heart goes out to the families impacted. They need our support. But we all need ACTION to stop the hate that is killing people. nytimes.com/live/2022/05/14/…

This is incorrect. #QualifiedImmunity has nothing to do with an officer’s point of view. The merits of a Fourth Amendment claim implicate that. QI explicitly precludes courts from considering an officer’s subjective intent and often prevents courts from reaching the merits.

I'm proud of my students. (They're fierce!) I'm indebted to our federal defender partners for sharing their expertise & trusting us with their clients. Most of all, I'm grateful to our client for putting his faith in this team (& for the *hand-knit* ❄️🌨️ gear). Welcome home.

One common refrain you hear from Black officers is that they can mostly get along fine so long as they put the “blue” before the Black, @RadleyBalko writes.

After centuries of the US failing to outlaw the kidnapping, torture and murder of Black people (lynching) @POTUS @VP Harris + Congress made history today by signing the #EmmettTill Antilynching Act. I was honored to spend time w/them and Ms. Ollie Gordon, a cousin of Emmet Till.
