A 16-year-old girl in Anambra State was allegedly sexually assaulted by her own father and became pregnant. Sadly, reports claim that both she and her father were banished from their community. My question is: Why should the victim be banished alongside the perpetrator? What crime did she commit to deserve such punishment? She was the victim of sexual assault, yet she appears to have suffered the same consequences as the person who allegedly abused her. Interestingly, in the Bible, Lot slept with his own daughters, resulting in pregnancies, yet he is still remembered as a significant biblical figure. Why do societies sometimes punish victims of sexual abuse instead of protecting them and holding the perpetrators accountable? Where is the justice? Why should a victim suffer for a crime committed against her?
