What value to readers does a computer-generated highlight add? Our whole business is built on trust; can we trust an AI?
Two weeks ago, our bargaining unit members were notified we are part of an #AI pilot program launched by @Gannett that auto-generates story highlights. When editors use the feature, the system adds the tagline below at the bottom of the story. This week, we took a stand.

If the news that our CEO made 76 times as much as the average employee of the company in 2023 sounds bad, it could be worse. In fact that’s what The Palm Beach Post and The Shiny Sheet's corporate owner, @Gannett, wants.

My last Gannett raise was 1.75% in 2019.

When will Gannett pay its workers a living wage? They talk about caring for workers but their actions show that words are wind.

TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE NEWS: With 96% of the unit voting, Rochester Democrat and Chronicle & Canandaigua Daily Messenger journalists @rocnewsguild unanimously authorize a STRIKE over Gannett’s unfair labor practices if a contract isn't agreed on by EOD Friday.

Gannett should be hiring now to build newsrooms that can hold power to account. Instead, they’ve cut thousands of local news jobs.
News: Chief Content Officer Kristen Roberts announced the elimination of the use of Associated Press in all publications as of March 25. confirmed by two gannett journalists- first reported by @BenMullin A blow to AP and readers.

I haven’t had a pay raise since 2019. And that was 1.75%.
Will Gannett stay true to its word and reinvest in local journalism and local journalism jobs?

Solidarity to my union siblings
It's official: As of 7 a.m. today, @TDSNewsGuild is now on strike!!! Taking this step is not easy. But after being denied any sort of regular cost of living raises for the last three years, we decided it's time to deny @Gannett our labor until a fair contract is reached!

Good news. Solidarity!
UPDATE: Gannett has given us MLK Day off as a paid holiday!

Not granting us the holiday, which they did in 2023, is a baffling move.
Gannett has refused to grant us Monday off for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The day is a holiday for its non-union employees. Another bad move by Gannett.

There have to be better ways to save money.
.@Gannett, axing our access to Lexis Nexis is a terrible way to attempt to save money by cutting fact-based journalism.

On Friday, our union learned that @reviewed mgmt had secretly contracted with a third party marketing firm to produce content and publish it on our site - work that would otherwise have been done by our staff, or by our digital marketers, before the bosses cut their department.

Why is @gannett posting fake stories by robot reporters after telling us that AI will not replace journalists? Thankfully @ReviewedUnion is fighting this latest union- and journalism-busting move.
UPDATE: @Reviewed's shoddy AI consumer reviews are back up again, after @Gannett seemingly shut them down earlier today. Here's the link. Which is the worst review on here? reviewed.usatoday.com/shoppi…

Congratulations and solidarity!
The Florida Times-Union Guild is pleased to announce our members voted 19-0 to approve our first contract. This wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our dedicated journalists, loyal readers and amazing community. Thank you all for helping us along the way. ✊

Standing in solidarity with my union siblings at @ReviewedUnion! I’m not crossing the line. Gannett needs to come to the table. #gannettgreed
It’s official, Reviewed is on strike. No bargaining? No bargain hunting on Prime Day. This Prime Day, don’t cross the clicket line. Stand with our striking members and don’t click or share any Reviewed content today. #gannettgreed

I know everyone is dunking on this, but I’m going to add on. Last year @Gannett laid off at least 600 ppl and stopped filling 400 jobs. People had to wait almost 2 months for their severance, which btw was capped at 26 years. Local this, local that. Where are the priorities?
A new era in your career is coming ...Ready For It? 💫 @USATODAY and @Tennessean are enchanted to announce we seek an experienced, video-forward reporter to cover @taylorswift13. Sound like the job of your wildest dreams? You could be the 1. Apply here:  bit.ly/3PBvuMT

Many people have always thought that anyone could report and write a news story. Now, some of those people are in charge of our newspapers.
Less than a week after Gannett higher-ups told us AI wasn’t going to replace reporters we get an AI-generated sports story:
