Republicans are going to have a terrible night, and the simple reason why is that Trump has put up perhaps the worst *performance* this term of any president in a century or more. Remember that he entered with an actual mandate: the House and Senate, a popular vote victory and a swing-state sweep, and 6-3 Supreme Court. Democrats were afraid enough to vote for mild but real immigration restrictionist legislation in the Laken Riley Act. Everyone wondered how far the "Vibe Shift" would go. Trump managed to turn that into essentially zero durable wins whatsoever. He personally *hates* the very idea of legislation, the notion that he would have to spend time going back and forth with Congress, learning details and making compromises. So he simply didn't do it! He didn't make a compelling case for abolishing the filibuster. He didn't try communicating clearly to the public in support of popular bills to get to 60 votes. He just decided not to do it at all. So they passed an unpopular tax cut, some funding for ICE, and a sop to the crypto industry, and that was basically it. Least productive Congress in decades, due to the tastes of one man. Trump adopted one of the worst macro policies we've ever had: high deficits, high tariffs, and attacks on central bank independence. We managed to pay higher interest rates while still having high trade deficits AND weakening the dollar. Just a total failure. On immigration, perhaps THE signature issue, Trump essentially min-maxxed effectiveness and backlash. Instead of trying to leverage the political moment for new laws and a self-deportation agenda (that is, walling off the economy to remove the benefit of irregular presence in the US), he opted for a maximally aggressive approach. The administration spent attention, funds, legal manpower on stunts like deporting random people to Salvadoran prisons with essentially no due process. ICE and Border Patrol were encouraged to be aggressive and confrontational, which helped contribute to the shooting deaths of American protestors. It turns out, that's extremely unpopular! What about the approach of going after employers? The obvious vector? Trump hated that idea! He repeatedly has said he doesn't want to target businesses (especially farms) that use large amounts of illegal labor. This is just an incomprehensible position. Instead of charging a few dozen businessmen and removing the incentive for millions of illegal workers to be here, you arrest people off the street one by one at the cost of thousands of dollars in manpower per each, while their crying wives and kids post TikToks about it. Upshot on immigration: electoral strength turned into a crippling electoral weakness in exchange for deporting maybe 6% of the illegally present population. The tariffs were a total shitshow. Embarrassing rollout, no underlying theory of action at all. No targeted focus on key industries. Our country tariffed products we can't grow. We tariffed *inputs* of our own valuable exports. The schemes and amounts changed constantly, sending the stock market reeling and presenting scenes of chaos to the world. Trump's messaging throughout has been generationally bad. While facing nearly 2:1 unpopularity, he spends his days posting AI slop, saying he'll rename New Mexico or invade allies, among other bizarre remarks. He brags about a ballroom and a pool repainting while gas hits records. At no point has he ever attempted any kind of message discipline. Then there are the deeply unpopular attacks on rule of law, his "game-recognize-game" pardons for all manner of scammers and criminals, the crypto schemes that he and his family engage in, the evilly conceived and embarrassingly executed legal attacks on Comey, Jerome Powell, and others. With his monthslong stand on NOT releasing the Epstein files, he became maybe the first president ever to stake out a 99-1 issue on the 1% side. That's not even getting into Iran, DOGE, his candidate recruitment choices, or countless other things. Simply put: Trump has managed to royally screw up virtually every single facet of his presidency. It's been undeniable, voters have noticed, and there's really no escape from it. This is what the GOP base chose in early 2024, and this is the world they're living with now. Where they handed the reins of history to a fat, vain, washed-up old man and let him drive.

I've thought about this clip for 3 years. The terrible autotune, the focal point of the shot being her nostrils, half of the hallway set being almost unlit, her going from being next to Damian and Janis to being 4 feet in front of them when she starts walking. It is glorious.

The thing that makes the Lizzie Borden Netflix show so frustrating is that there are details that prove the writers are fairly well-read on the history, but they have the side effect of proving that they chose to make up the parts of the story that aren't true

telling your viewers they have to watch 18 hours of television first in order to enjoy your movie is actively insane. Can we go back to when movies didn't come with homework?

If I had a nickel for every Safdie brother who collaborated on a project with an alternative comedian from Canada, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.
JOSH SAFDIE and MATT JOHNSON are working on a project together, described as a “TSA comedy” (via @Vulture) tinyurl.com/eybm2ajh

the reason we don't get more proshots of musicals is that SAG-AFTRA and AEA won't work out a standard contract for them. It was cheaper to fly the original cast to London to film the show there (they only have one union for stage/screen) than to film it on Broadway
Hadestown: The Musical is projected to open with $9.69M from 1,949 domestic theaters, marking the second‑largest debut ever for a live‑capture Broadway release. the-numbers.com/movie/Hadest… #BoxOffice #Hadestown @MovieNumbers

"I haven't been able to afford steak or alcohol in years, but I can afford to give the world's richest man $8 a month so he'll put a little blue checkmark by my name"
I just left Costco and I feel like an idiot... The people in front of me bought $1,200 in top shelf alcohol, cases of redbull, and steaks. They split it up and paid for the steaks and redbull with EBT, and then pulled out a giant wad of $100 bills to pay for the alcohol in cash. WTF am I doing with my life??? I haven't bought steak in years - I haven't bought alcohol in decades. Too expensive. On the rare occasion we eat out, I buy the cheapest thing on the menu. Yet these people can just casually drop thousands of dollars of my tax money on things I can't even afford?? Just to drive home to a taxpayer funded house nicer than I live in. We are completely destroyed as a society.

I cannot stress how little sponsorship segments interfere with my viewing experience. At their worst, I can just skip ahead to after the ad (which I can't do with YT's ads). At their best, the creators make the ad reads fun and engaging, so much that you don't even notice them
A class-action lawsuit has been filed against YouTube over its "ad-free" subscription claims Plaintiffs argue YouTube Premium still shows ads because creators include sponsorship segments in their videos

The thing is, Jeremy Strong is a better actor, but Jesse Eisenberg endured full ego death and became Mark Zuckerberg in a way he never fully abandoned
Jesse Eisenberg recalls telling Aaron Sorkin he didn’t want to reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg in “The Social Reckoning,” saying he was “moving in different directions” and no longer wanted to be “associated with the character”: “The way Aaron speaks, in a way, if you’re not going to do something with him, it almost feels like you’re letting down America.”

Went to see a Steppenwolf show last night, and Glenn Davis was outside making a phone call, and there's a near 100% chance he heard me mutter to my friend "Was that Glenn Davis?"

the legality of AI deepfakes may still be murky, but the legality of copyright infringement sure isn't. @RnH_Legacy, I hope cease-and-desists are one of your favorite things.
NEW: The Trump-aligned org Citizens for Sanity is dropping a six-figure ad buy in the Texas Senate race. The ad is a 15 second clip of AI-generated James Talarico singing a "trans kids" rendition of “Favorite Things." Obtained first by @DailyCaller:

Hey, that was a funny joke Christine! Let's all go in a circle and name what presidents our husbands have served as advisors for.
I'm screaming at this Tony Award speech LOL I love when people are petty "Well, I think I should start by thanking Apple TV for ~canceling~ the third season of Schmigadoon the TV show, because without them dropping it we couldn't have picked it up and run with it. So thanks, Apple TV" Schmigadoon just won 4 Tony Awards from 12 nominations, including Best Musical
