Imagine being trapped on a mountain highway in a blinding blizzard for three days with your children crying in the back seat, your fuel gauge near empty, and nothing left to eat. In February 2014, a once-in-a-century snowstorm dumped forty-five inches of snow across Yamanashi Prefecture near Mount Fuji, burying highways and stranding more than one thousand cars in sub-zero cold. Helicopters could not fly in the whiteout, and snowplows could not break through. Stuck in the middle of that frozen traffic jam were white delivery trucks from Yamazaki Baking Company loaded with thousands of loaves of bread and sweet buns meant for supermarkets. In many places, a seller sitting on the only food for miles might charge twenty dollars a loaf or lock his cargo doors. Instead, the Japanese truck drivers unlatched their rear doors, stepped out into the waist-deep snow, and knocked on the frosted windows of stranded cars one by one. With both hands, they handed out their entire cargo of bread for free, telling freezing parents: "These cannot reach the stores on time anyway, so please feed your children and stay warm." Hours later, local villagers walked up the highway embankment carrying steaming pots of homemade pork miso soup and hot tea for total strangers. When headquarters heard what the drivers had done without permission, the company praised their judgment. In Japan, human life comes before inventory.
