Behind every maternal and newborn death is a sobering reminder of the work that remains to be done. Our collective commitment must translate into action that saves lives and transforms health outcomes. Investing in maternal and newborn health is investing in the future of our communities.
The signing of the MoU between @KenyaGovernors and the Beginnings Fund reaffirms our shared commitment to strengthen health systems and improve maternal and newborn health outcomes in Kenya. Realizing these outcomes requires the concerted efforts of all stakeholders, including both levels of government and partners.
We are confident that this initiative will deliver real impact for mothers and newborns across Kenya.

The Council of Governors and Beginnings Fund are advancing a five-year investment initiative aimed at accelerating reductions in maternal and neonatal mortality and preventing stillbirths, in line with Kenya's 2030 health targets.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), signed earlier between the two institutions, marks an important milestone in strengthening collaboration with County Governments towards improving maternal and newborn health outcomes in Kenya.
The investment is expected to contribute to saving approximately 46,494 lives, comprising 25,432 newborn lives, 16,162 stillbirths and 4,900 maternal lives. It targets products, people and health systems with a focus on:
✅Strengthening the health workforce to deliver quality maternal and newborn health services.
✅Equipping health facilities with the equipment and commodities required for quality maternal and newborn care.
✅Scaling evidence-based, high-impact interventions.
✅Strengthening health systems to complement existing maternal and newborn health initiatives.

Kenya and Beginnings Fund Advance Partnership to Reduce Maternal and Newborn Deaths
Principal Secretary for Medical Services Dr. Ouma Oluga this morning held a consultative meeting with the Beginnings Fund team, led by Chief Executive Officer Alice Kangethe, to discuss implementation of the USD 80 million, five-year Kenya Investment Plan. The plan aims to reduce preventable maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths.
Held at Afya House, the meeting brought together Dr. David Gathara and Dr. Gladwel Gatheca, representing the Ministry of Health’s Director of Family Health. Discussions focused on the implementation pathway and coordination arrangements.
Co-designed with the Government of Kenya, the plan will target 21 high-burden counties and 200 priority facilities: 20 Level 5 hospitals, 136 Level 4 hospitals and 44 high-volume health centres. It complements the national Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Health (RMNCAH) Investment Case and the Every Woman Every Newborn Everywhere (EWENE) Acceleration Plan.
The investment will strengthen emergency obstetric and newborn care, access to essential commodities and medical technologies, and training and support for health workers. It will also improve referral systems, blood availability and maternity and newborn care infrastructure, while integrating maternal and newborn health data into TaifaCare to strengthen performance monitoring and accountability.
The Ministry and Beginnings Fund will establish joint governance arrangements, with Dr. Oluga designated to co-chair the Steering Committee. Implementation will be guided by clear responsibilities, measurable milestones, performance-based financing, county participation and progressive domestic financing to sustain the gains beyond the investment period.
By 2030, the plan is expected to reach 5.9 million mothers and newborns with higher-quality care and prevent an estimated 46,494 maternal and newborn deaths and stillbirths.

▶️ BETTER BEGINNINGS FOR MOTHERS AND NEWBORNS IN ZANZIBAR
We are proud to be part of a five-year partnership between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar, through the @wizaraafyaznz Ministry of Health, and the @BeginningsFund to strengthen maternal and newborn health services.
Through the Zanzibar Investment Plan, the partnership will support improvements in the quality of care across 63 health facilities in five priority districts across Unguja and Pemba, helping more women experience safer pregnancies and childbirth while improving health outcomes for newborns.
Led by Zanzibar’s Ministry of Health, the partnership brings together local and technical partners, including Mkapa Foundation, #zanzibarhipz @WAJAMAMA1 and @ifakarahealth to support the delivery of quality maternal and newborn healthcare.
Over the next 5 years, the partnership will focus on strengthening the health workforce, supporting access to essential medicines and equipment, and improving the systems needed to deliver quality care.
20 years of impacting lives, we Mkapa Foundation believe every mother deserves quality care and every newborn deserves a healthy start to life. Through collaboration and a shared commitment to stronger health systems, we are contributing to a future where more women and newborns in Zanzibar can access the care they need.
