This from Dennis is particularly brilliant. He was asked a leading question about how much conversion therapy is out there, and he turned it incredibly effectively to the post-modern "conversion therapy" that is gender medicine. There is definitely a lot of "reparative therapy" out there - and it's done by the gender clinicians who put gay teenagers on the path to chemical and/or physical castration. The framing the question suggested was that this bill is addressing a serious, existing harm, albeit perhaps the bill needs some safeguards to stop overreach. Dennis moved back onto his own framing, showing that there is a genuine, serious problem with conversion therapy, but it's not where the panel committee think it is, and this bill will make it worse.
The Conversion Practices bill โ€œmakes it a crime to say to your teenaged daughter: I want you to love your body, I want you to grow up to be a happy lesbian. I DO NOT BELIEVE YOU ARE A MAN!โ€ ๐Ÿ’” @Jebadoo2

I want you all to know this. There are 650 MPs in Parliament. Yet the one MP chosen by @UKLabour to Chair the Bill Committee for the controversial, dangerous and dismally bad draft legislation, the Conversion Practices Bill, is Alex Barros-Curtis. Until July 2024, when Alex was given a very safe Labour seat in Cardiff, he was the Head of the Labour Party's Governance and Legal Unit in London. This was a department set up to investigate complaints against members of the Labour Party. Complaints of antisemitism, Islamophobia, abuse, and of course latterly, mostly women holding legally-protected 'Gender Critical' (sex realist) beliefs. Alex oversaw the investigation of hundreds of members who liked or tweeted gender critical or feminist views. I was one of them. He investigated me, as a sitting Labour MP, for 13 months. 13 months to 'investigate' one like of one tweet. I had a great lawyer, one of the names we're all now familiar with, and I had to crowdfund to pay for his (excellent) work. They first tried in 2020. But the screenshots crudely attached to that passive aggressive, threatening-sounding email from LP admin staff were so risible that I replied that it was too ridiculous for me to waste my precious time on. They left it. Years of Starmer bumbling and stuttering through interviews about whether he had spoken to me, whether he supported me, etc followed. My feminist sins continued apace. And then I 'liked' a tweet by my GC comedian friend @Glinner. He had mocked Eddie'Suzy' for comparing his choice to wear traditional women's clothing, fake plastic breasts and nails, to those being persecuted by the Nazis during WWII. I found his sarcasm, as a award-winning comedy writer in the face of such offensive narcissism amusing and so 'liked' it. I found it absurd and obscene that Izzard, an extremely privileged and wealthy man, who openly changed his 'gender' at will, should write himself into history falseley as someone who would have been oppressed due to a circumstance beyond his control. We all know the groups who were tortured, starved and killed... There is obviously more to my story, I will tell it all, it's just one chapter of the years of spiteful abusive and bullying practices meted out to me by the Labour Party managers. Not those who'd achieved office on merit, or even unexpectedly, but those in the club, often having failed to be elected themselves. So Barros-Curtis who we were repeatedly told led 'the many *independent* inquiries into women members and MPs like me, now often stands as a trans-rights activist on the Labour backbenches. He has also been gifted the role of Chair of this Committee and is a huge supporter of this Bill. And I am not a part of the Bill Committee, although plenty of TRA MPs are. Does that sound like the democratic scrutiny of legislation to you?

Another meeting with expert psychotherapists, academics and experienced parents discussing the many potential harms of the terrible #CPBill #conversionbill. Some of us Parliamentarians have been steeped in this for several years, yet the Bill is being led through the House by those new MPs who had an agenda to push it as Labour Party activists and staffers. One drafted it, one is Chairing - and was the Head of Investigations against women like me. Women like me would have been blocked from joining the Bill Committee as a Labour MP, I have zero chance of getting near it and contributing now. Won't stop me finding other platforms to speak against it though, obviously...

This is how media distorts news: Look at the headlines. With Gaza @guardian lead with civilian deaths. On Jordan's strikes in Syria, no mention at all. Would you believe civilians, including women and children, were killed there too. Same story - completely different approach.

Need help please! An independent bookseller in Bath have agreed to list Pat Carlen's and my book (quite a coup given that they also stock Grave Lavery and Susan Stryker) If 10 people can order it, I might be in with a chance of getting it stocked. The book is about my fight against OU. It is straight up GC and recounts feminist and lesbian lives in UK in 80s onwards. If you know someone near southwest / Bath, please get them to order the book. mrbsemporium.com/

Instead of saying (repeatedly) how much you just want people to be able to calmly and kindly express their views, you could just calmly and kindly express your views, rather like JK Rowling did (assuming you actually have views rather than slogans)
This is painful to watch. You can almost see the cogs moving. An absolutist has realised her original position was built on toxic sand and tries to head for decent solid ground. And fails.

๐Ÿ”ŠTo those asking, โ€œHow can we help Afghan women?โ€ First, share their voices. In a time when even speaking puts women at risk, being heard means hope, visibility, and survival. Second, support our online education program. Despite fear and restrictions, Afghan girls are secretly continuing their studies. You can help by sponsoring internet access so students can attend online classes, or by volunteering as a teacher and sharing your knowledge with girls who have been denied education. Third, support food aid for widows and women living alone who have no male provider in the household and are often too afraid to go outside. Quite extraordinary for the minister to say this. Not only does the extremely wide draft bill permit for parents and ordinary free speech to be prosecuted the former minister who introduced this bill said that it would and rejected a parental carve out. Breathtaking dishonesty.
Minister's letter to the pre-legislative scrutiny committee published. How? ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿคทโ€โ™€๏ธ How do they think it protects parental rights or freedom of religion and belief? There is nothing on the face of the bill that does any such thing. committees.parliament.uk/pubโ€ฆ

This is so dishonest. A society which values freedom must stop demanding that we pretend to believe men are whatever men say they are and women are whatever men say they are.

We have now written an open letter to the Bridget Phillipson regarding the misinformation that appeared in her article on the conversion practices bill this weekend. This level of nonsense in public debates is getting ridiculous and it is time she and her officials sorted it.

Having watched so many ordinary Parisian shopkeepers weeping as they survey the wreckage of their lifeโ€™s work, some personally battered & bruised from trying to defend their shops & bars from the thugs, I find the populist idiocy of this hard to credit.
If I was Prime Minister , if I was Burnham , watching European cities ablaze . . . Iโ€™d instigate a โ€˜wealth taxโ€™ at about 9.01am tomorrow morning . Just saying . Or should we just โ€˜eat cakeโ€™ ?
