Day 2 of South Africa’s inaugural Tree Symposium took place on 9 September. 🌳 Over two days, delegates have engaged with leading experts through keynote presentations, technical sessions, panel discussions and networking opportunities. Key themes that have been covered include indigenous tree conservation, threatened species, urban greening, restoration ecology, climate resilience, tree health, propagation and cultivation, as well as the role of trees in achieving South Africa’s biodiversity and climate goals. As urbanisation and climate change place increasing pressure on our ecosystems, the symposium has fostered cross-sector collaboration to strengthen climate resilience, protect biodiversity and help build greener, healthier communities. #SATreeSymposium #KirstenboschNBG #WeAreSANBI

From the island’s coasts to its sloping mountain ranges, Puerto Rico’s tropical forests teem with biodiversity. But these forests are even more diverse than they appear at first glance: When it comes to how they use water, trees in Puerto Rico are surprisingly individualistic. A recently published study reveals that in these forests, two trees belonging to the same species can vary wildly in how they transport, manage, and store water, depending on how dry it is in their specific habitats. The findings suggest Puerto Rico’s tropical forests may be more resilient to drought than once thought and point toward better ways to model forests’ responses to future climate change. The planet’s undisturbed old-growth boreal forests may be far more important in the fight against climate change than previously realized, according to a new Science study, which finds that primary forests in Sweden store over 70% more carbon than managed secondary forests. 📰🌲 A new study, published in Nature, and coordinated by INRAE and Bordeaux Sciences Agro reveals that conservative tree species—those efficient at conserving resources like water and nutrients—actually grow faster in real-world forest conditions than the traditionally faster-growing acquisitive species. This breakthrough, based on research across 160 experimental forests worldwide, shows how local conditions (soil quality, climate) play a huge role in tree growth and carbon sequestration. 🌱 For forest managers, this means the key to boosting carbon storage lies in choosing the right species for the environment. In tough climates, conservative species like fir and holm oak excel, while in more favourable conditions, acquisitive species like poplars and maples thrive. 🔗 Find out more: ow.ly/ExL750VkBqN #ForestManagement #TreeGrowth #SustainableForestry #CarbonSequestration #EnvironmentalResearch #ClimateAdaptation
