Glass cups from the Iron Age. Apparently, the Vikings purchased them from the Romans, who were highly skilled at glassmaking. Other Roman artefacts, such as coins, have been found as far away as Japan.

Capricorn risings have one of the most internationally oriented charts you can imagine. Pisces 3H, Virgo 9H, Sagittarius 12H, Cancer 7H. Jupiter rules their 3H and 12H, and is exalted in their 7H. Mercury rules their 9H, where it also has its exaltation. Their communication and immediate surroundings (3H), their experiences of foreign cultures, travel, and higher learning (9H), their encounters with distant or unfamiliar worlds (12H), and their relationships with other people (7H) are connected through Jupiter and Mercury. There is something especially interesting about how strongly this chart emphasises learning from people whose experiences differ from their own. Relationships can introduce them to unfamiliar cultures, languages, philosophies, and ways of living. Conversations with people from elsewhere may profoundly change how they understand themselves and the world. I think Capricorn risings should make a deliberate effort to meet international people, learn languages, travel when possible, and maintain relationships beyond their immediate environment. Their lives can become extraordinarily rich when they refuse to let the world they grew up in become the limit of the world they know.

I’m feeling very unmoored lately, adrift. Given the pace of change the only real certainty anyone can have about the future is that it’s going to be really, really weird

mythological themes always bring out the best in artists. Botticelli's Venus, Michelangelo's David, Cellini's Perseus...artists do their best work when they visualize the mysterious world of the mythic

One of the greatest misunderstandings in religion is the belief that stories about what happens after death are necessarily describing what happens when the physical body dies. The Egyptian Book of the Dead, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, the Greek myths of descent into the underworld, and even the biblical accounts of death and resurrection can all be understood as descriptions of internal processes that take place while we’re still alive. The descent into the underworld is the confrontation with everything we’ve buried within ourselves. The judgment of the dead is the moment we can no longer hide from the truth of what we are. The terrifying deities of the Tibetan tradition are manifestations of consciousness that must be recognized rather than feared. And the resurrection described in Christianity is the emergence of a new way of being after the identity we’ve spent our lives constructing begins to dissolve. The problem is that people have spent thousands of years turning descriptions of experiences into beliefs about places they’ll go after they die. They’ve mistaken maps of consciousness for maps of the afterlife. I’m not claiming to know entirely what happens after physical death. What I’m saying is that there’s a death you can experience long before your body dies, and until you’ve undergone it, you’re largely dependent on what other people tell you these stories mean. You can spend your entire life studying descriptions of resurrection without ever actually experiencing it. You can memorize every detail of the underworld without ever making the descent. At some point, you have to stop studying the map and actually make the journey. The kingdom of heaven isn’t necessarily somewhere you go when you die….it’s something you can discover while you’re still alive.

Illustrated manuscript of Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy produced in Northern Italy, during the late 14th century. Having climbed past Lucifer at the center of the Earth, Roman poet Virgil (Virgilio) reaches out to guide Dante Alighieri, as they emerge onto the shores of the mountain of Purgatory. "E quindi uscimmo a riveder le stelle." (And so we emerged to see the stars again.)
