Cortisol is a remarkable #hormone. We generally consider it a #stress hormone, which isn't wrong. But few appreciate its primary purpose: increase blood #glucose. Of course, this puts cortisol at odds with #insulin, promoting #insulinresistance. But how cortisol increases glucose is important to appreciate its systemic effects. Cortisol is so determined to provide the liver with substrate for the synthesis of new glucose that it will strip amino acids from proteins within skin, muscle, and more. This leads to a weakening of the tissues, causing stretch marks, easy bruising, sarcopenia (muscle wasting), and more. Any drug intervention that mimics cortisol (say to reduce inflammation or mitigate and autoimmune disease) will not only promote rapid insulin resistance, but lead to the tissue wasting mentioned above.

I gave a slam talk at the Luxembourg Science Slam last night. It was a great experience. As scientists we should never underestimate the importance of communicating with the general public and making them understand what we are doing and why we are doing it……
Tonight, Dr. @ArchieMposhi from the @IEE_Research_Gp gave a terrific talk to present his work on how Early Life Adversity shapes your future, during the Science Slam 2023 🧬✨ ! Congratulations 🍾🎉 ! @LIH_Luxembourg @uni_lu #luxdoc #epigenetics #DESCOM

Mass spec imaging of metabolites at the organelle level had been thought impossible. AND accomplishing it w/ absolute quantification is like a double olympic gold medal (think 2020 Barshim & Tamberi). Done & done @MKurczy et al. @NatMetabolism doi.org/10.1038/s42255-023-0…

No better time than during the #ISDP23 conference to announce that the first biosamples have just arrived in our lab for our #adversity #divergent #MZtwins project funded by the @FnrLux and done at the @LIH_Luxembourg with @ArchieMposhi – at Utrecht, The Netherlands

... and early life adversity is associated with alterations in mitochondrial respiratory capacity (Boeck et al., 2018, Boeck et al., 2016, Gumpp et al., 2020), indicating that mitochondria are likely targets of psychological states.
