If you had a language that was super easy to learn, but full of weird oddities, and people could jam out websites super fast with it, there it is, piles of it

We're starting to see some agentic Rust forks (or alternative implementations) focused on iteration speed.
More-so than the specific projects, I'm interested in the ideas being explored (and how they could evolve upstream), so wanted to collate a few here...

October has been an absolute nightmare for software
> Railway - customer secrets exposure
> LiteLLM - malicious PyPI + Docker releases
> Zeabur - infrastructure breached
> OpenCode - AI API keys exposed
> OVHcloud CLI - official binaries backdoored
> Rank Math PRO - malware in official plugin
> TeamUpdraft - customer data compromised
> ConnectWise - cloud backup identities compromised
> Tensorlake - npm package infected
> SubQuery - backdoored npm package
> GhostAction - GitHub repos with malicious workflows
> PHP - critical RCE vulnerabilities
> Node.js - security vulnerabilities patched
> eMudhra - certificate authority keys compromised
> Tailscale - eMudhra incident
At this point, the biggest security risk might not be the code we write, but the code we trust...

You know it'll be "fun" when PHP Core Developer considers the best mitigation to be "turning off a server for a day". 🙃

I'll call slop slop whether or not it was made by AI. Slop existed before AI. But AI-driven slop is worse just because it is not something the vibe-coder is going to learn from.
"Generic" is a criticism to ask for something better.
"Broken on mobile". How is that bad to say?
I wish experienced developers would stop shitting on people who build things with AI.
“AI slop.”
“Generic.”
“Broken on mobile.”
A person that doesn't know the first thing about programming, but had an idea, built an actual product, and had the courage to share it with the world, gets bullied basically.
How about a little encouragement instead?
Everyone starts somewhere!

Wanted to explore some web directories, but saw one listing about Rust (a programming language), but with Rust (a video game) logo! 😅

Recent Zed binary size reduction uses a * option.
[profile.release.package]
"*" = { opt-level = 3 }
- 238 workspace crates (70% of the code): opt-level = "z"
- 19 workspace crates: opt-level = 3 (hot paths)
- 0 external deps use "z" crates.io / git : opt-level = 3
Replying to @zeddotdev
Some details:
- Set opt-level = "z" for release profile
- Override to opt-level = 3 for performance-critical crates
- Set codegen-units = 1 for the zed package
- On macOS, pass -Wl,-unexported_symbol,__R* to hide Rust-mangled symbols from the export table

They created Rust.
They sought to rewrite all things in Rust.
Then God created AI.
And lo, the great rewrite began...
posting this for the nth time
Found something funny when reading Tailscale code.
They use a Cyrillic letter "ж" (reads as "zh") for the variable which shouldn't be exposed to callers and mutated. This is an artificial barrier for human devs that should raise concerns when trying to type it.
Apparently it looks like an asterisk meaning it's a pointer. But for me it's a familiar letter which I didn't expect to see in the code and was like Ж? WAT?
Yeah, you can use unicode letters in Go code if you want.
I now really want to use something like that in my code because I bet it'll make me smile every time I see it

Go programmers will pull this shit and then seriously tell you to your face that it's a well designed language

Launch week wasn’t long enough. So next week, we ship even more.
SurrealDB 4, SurrealFS, SurrealDB Earth, and more.
Simplicity or scale?
Transactions or speed?
Yes.
Stop choosing.
Next week, we ship even more.
Rust and LLMs are the perfect match
