Every year thousands of kids across our country are turned away unfairly or illegally from public schools. That has to change. It's time to ensure public schools are available to all kids. Join us in this fight: availabletoall.org/ #AvailableToAll #PublicEducation

"Merrill seems to be asking us to take seriously the banal drama of an elite young man, two girls, and a year abroad, conveyed via the traditional means of plot, character, and scene." Me today @unherd on a very good book. @cribbenMerrill @timderoche unherd.com/2026/10/the-retur…

A guy writes a book. It has been a long time. Me for @unherd on a Girardian direction for literature. @cribbenMerrill @WisebloodBooks unherd.com/2026/10/the-retur…

Somehow @valerie_reads takes a book review and turns it into a clever meditation on where literature can and should go. Excellent work. And @cribbenMerrill has written a wonderful book--wise and witty both.

It’s a mistake to design public policy that requires someone to act against the best interests of their own children.

I wholeheartedly agree with this idea. When we lived in Hendricks County years ago, our oldest was 4 days from the cutoff. He had to "test" in. Avon (our home district) said no, due to class size. Took him to Danville. They took him. He is in Purdue's engineering program now.

The most common form of school choice in Indiana is transfers between traditional public schools. It's time we allow local funding to follow the student, even to one of these competitive traditional public schools. Read my latest for @indystar below.

Districts spying on kids is the *inevitable* consequence of assigning kids to schools based on residential address. And these laws are selectively enforced. Lots of families are--wink, wink--allowed to stay in schools even when the school knows they're using someone else's address.

These archaic policies allow coveted public schools to cherry pick their kids. The Unfulfilled Promises Brown v. Board of Education Made

THIRD, state funding formulas should allow for easy open enrollment across district lines. If your state's funding formula keeps kids trapped in failing schools that aren't a good fit, then the funding formula is hurting families and needs to be reformed. 5/n
