Taught in the 19th century for good reasons: we computed a/b with long division. For 1/sqrt(2) = sqrt(2)/2, find sqrt(2) in a table, and decide if long division is easier to get 1.414213562/2 versus 1/1.414213562. Taught today for bad reasons: because it was taught yesterday.

learned from a student that the local high schools still teach them they must "simplify" a fraction involving a radical by moving it out of the denominator 🙄

One problem with this country is that people who own 700 guns each and attend occasional klan meetings have been convinced by people who own 2 guns each and sit on boards of directors that people who don't own any guns and like libraries are eating babies.

Unions might, for instance, decide to weigh in on 'work conditions' related to how you do research. I am not talking about (of course appropriate!) lab safety standards, but other things. ;-)
