This district is the home of the Jack Daniels distillery. Which has not been able to sell its booze in much of Canada for almost two years.
It's over. Scott DesJarlais — in Congress since 2011, in a seat redrawn at Trump +24 and priced at 99.9% Republican — has lost to Democrat Victoria Broderick by 280 votes, 95,585 to 95,305, 100% counted. She raised less than $100,000. The shock of the night in Tennessee.

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Energy Regulator says it received 10 successful bids in total, marking the first time since 2022 that companies have purchased exploration licenses in the province. It was the largest number of successful bids since 2000.

Every week AI does something amazing in mathematics.
As part of CFSG formalization we found 96 errors in 47 published papers. These papers were peer reviewed and published in top math journals including the Annals of Mathematics. And yet there are errors and gaps uncovered by the formalization. That's why formalization is critical, especially in the era of vibeproving. cfsg.axiommath.ai/errata

actually it's the battery that is designed like an eel lmao Volta, the inventor of the battery, was attempting to mimic the design of eels when he found a combination that worked
is anyone else bothered by the fact that there is a fish on this godforsaken planet that is designed exactly like a battery and can deliver an 800V shock

🇧🇷 "I address the Brazilian people and the international community as the true elected president of Brazil." Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who lost Sunday's presidential runoff to incumbent Lula da Silva by about 4.4 million votes, is claiming the presidency in a statement released from Miami, United States. Without offering any evidence, he calls the result "electoral fraud.” In the statement, Bolsonaro: ➤ Blames a last-minute Supreme Court decision extending voting hours, which he says arrived "after the legal closing time." He does not mention that at 3:50 p.m. Brasília time, his Liberal Party campaign also asked the Superior Electoral Court to extend voting to 7 p.m. in 19 rain-hit cities in São Paulo, Paraná and Santa Catarina. (It also asked that results be held back until voting there ended.) ➤ Calls the Supreme Court investigations against him a "politically motivated witch hunt," saying "there is no arrest warrant against me because I have committed no crime" ➤ Says "I didn't flee Brazil, I left Brazil," comparing himself to Charles de Gaulle, José Martí and Venezuela's Juan Guaidó ➤ Thanks Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei, and vows to "lead the opposition here.” He also praises Venezuela’s María Corina Machado for having "refused to legitimize the fraud,” and calls on international community to not "normalize what is happening in Brazil” Bolsonaro faces two Supreme Court investigations into alleged corruption and money laundering. He missed Tuesday's deadline to hand over his passports before fleeing to Miami.

I had real trouble believing that Google was actually doing this, but I just duplicated the result myself. The two queries were about a minute apart and identical except for a single digit.

Mindblowing.
Announcing three major scientific discoveries, one each in mathematics (harmonic analysis), computer science (complexity theory), and physics (quantum field theory). AI starting to help us improve our understanding of the universe! openai.com/index/building-sc…

I can't say that I had this on my radar for the federal government, particularly after several early missteps with First Nations. This type of effort is more likely to fail than succeed, but bravo to all involved for showing the courage to open the conversation.

NEW from me: Last year, Mark Carney set a goal to double Canada's non-US exports by 2035. Today, he's already halfway there In response to Trump's tariffs & threats, Canadian businesses, consumers, & even tourists are taking difficult steps to decouple from the US🧵

Interesting how big of a difference there is within math. Shows increase in arXiv papers from 2022 to 2025 vs. 2026, regular growth vs. AI explosion
Mathematics is by far the fastest growing field on ArXiv, now reaching 2x papers compared to the expected trend. While CS has also increased 35%, most of this comes from theoretical subfields, not from cs.AI or cs.LG, both of which are in line with expectations.

Massive. New Harvard study finds that AI-written paper reviews now beat the best human peer reviews on every measure the authors tested. Peer review is slow and often misses errors. Earlier studies concluded AI should only assist human reviewers, not replace them. They used 134 reviews from rapidPeer, a Harvard service that pays expert reviewers well. Claude Opus 4.8 reviewed the same 1124 papers, and GPT-5.5 plus 3 former journal editors judged the pairs blind. GPT-5.5 picked the AI review in all 132 decided pairs, and the editors picked it 87% of the time. Only 5.5% of the AI's claims about the paper were wrong, versus 15.9% for the human reviews. Teams that depend on expert critique can now let AI do the first full review pass, and keep a human for the final decision.
