Just wanted to make this post as there are some cherry-picked Circana stats out there for North America.
70 million physical PlayStation 5 games were sold in FY2025, 22% of all PlayStation game sales. Many PS5 games are not released physically (i.e. indies, or games like Mixtape, Dispatch, and ARC Raiders), or have limited print runs (i.e. Pragmata and Resident Evil Requiem were famously difficult to get a hold of physically).
It can also be more difficult to get hold of new copies of older games. Steam have said that only 15% of total player time and revenue there are from games less than 12 months old; this too would have an impact on physical sales, as it would push many towards a digital copy where a physical one isn't available.
To get an idea of what 70 million physical game sales looked like compared to other consoles (i.e. to try and strip out the effect of counting the purchase of a $5 indie and $70 AAA game equally) I did a comparison versus PS1 to PS4 physical game sales for their sixth years on the market (to try and account for the bell curve of game sales).
That calculation of 70 million physical games comes to 34.5% (PS1), 31.11% (mainly PS2), 42.56% (mainly PS3) and 42% (PS4) of what was sold is terms of physical games for FY99, FY05, FY11 and FY18 respectively.
Some recent games, such as Astro Bot, sold better physically than digitally (at least in Europe). The physical vs digital game split very much depends on game type; single player games do far better in terms of physical sales. We didn't have that many big single-player story based PS5 games so far this year.
All of this would factor into PS5 physical game sales.

It's honestly incredible how much has happened in the PS5 jailbreak scene in just a few weeks:
September 29: The Relapse jailbreak was publicly released for PS5 firmware versions 7.00–13.60.
October 1: PS5 14.10 firmware was released with further security hardening.
October 8–9: WebKit and Y2JB autoloaders made Relapse easier to launch.
October 12–13: The Byepervisor-Reborn hypervisor exploit was released publicly.
October 13: The Playden launcher was released, and the 13.60 kernel dump was published.
October 15: Ubuntu booted to the desktop on PS5 13.60.
October 19–20: A private 14.00/14.10 kernel exploit was demonstrated.
And now:
13.60 and below have a rapidly growing homebrew, emulator, and Linux ecosystem.
14.00/14.10 have private research, but no public full jailbreak chain yet.
The PS5 scene is moving incredibly fast.
Where do you think the PS5 scene goes next?

Your attempt to kill physical games is an ill-fated sci-fi journey. Keep it real and keep disc games alive. People want ownership. Developers want their games immortalized.

Oh, you mean it would just be two data discs?
Fuck you, @RockstarGames. You *know* people would pay up to three times as much to get the game on disc. Eat my ass, rats.

This is not GTA. It is preparation for endless Life style servers being the next cash cow... now that they own all the popular ones, even.
It was a nice ride while it lasted, guys. Cyberpunk 2077 is now more of a GTA game than GTA.

OH COME ON SONY
Sony Life Insurance has suffered a cyberattack that exposed personal information from around 385,000 customers.
The unauthorized access was discovered on October 27, and Sony Life blocked external access to the affected systems from the morning of October 28.
The leaked information reportedly includes:
-Names
-Dates of birth
-Gender
-Addresses
-Phone numbers
-Insurance policy numbers
-Contract details
Sony Life says the leaked data does not include My Number information, credit card details, or bank account information used for insurance payments.

Giant cash machines like Meta and Google are now negative cash flow; OpenAI and Anthropic have been from the start.* (*With the arguable exception of one anomalous quarter with a big subsidy.)
There is at least an 80% chance that this will turn out to be the greatest capital misallocation in history.

Yes, just insert the disc into your Xbox One and you’ll be prompted to install the game, enjoy!

So apparently physical media does sell, which is why they’re selling a printed physical book for up to $350?😅🚀
Celebrating the first 30 years the same year they tarnish the whole image and loyalty built in them, by announcing ending physical media using lies to push their narrative, is next level detachment from reality.
We need a real conversation about the entitlement of game publishers/studios.
