Re: Cold Card Hack
Hello fellow Bitcoiners,
It’s been nearly one week since my wallet was drained.
I lost my entire bitcoin stack, presumably the most in the entire attack - an amount I’m more than embarrassed and ashamed to even admit publicly. This was not only my life savings but my time, energy, hardcore conviction and identity after 13 years in this space.
I am posting pseudonymously as I’ve always preferred to stay out of the spotlight - and privacy (inspired by Satoshi) is something I value. I debated whether or not I should say anything at all, but after much deliberation I decided it may be beneficial for other victims who are struggling.
While this incident certainly forced upon me the darkest days of my life so far - I have now accepted it and will slowly put together my life again. I came from nothing and did everything right (except rolling the damn dice apparently 😅). I stayed away from trading, exchanges, shitcoins, ICOs, NFTs, false prophets, etc and quietly and consistently built up over the years through all the ups and downs - never spending frivolously on material goods but instead using bitcoin as my sense of freedom and security - with the hopes to pass it on to my future children.
Even though that peace, freedom and security is now gone - I am beyond grateful for the journey and life that bitcoin enabled me to have.
To all the other victims, as cliche as it is to say “it’s only money” - true wealth, as I’ve learned over and over again is in health, family, and friendships. I’d be lying if I told you I’m not afraid of the uncertainty ahead, but I know by taking one step at a time it will be possible to rebuild. Trust me if I can come to these realizations, you can too! The hardest challenges in life make us stronger and turn us into the best versions of ourselves - don’t give in to the hopelessness. By being in this community you are apart of something special that the majority of the world still hasn’t realized yet. It’s still early!
Thanks to all the wonderful people in the community I’ve been DMing over the past week - your kind words of support mean the world to me and helped me start to believe in myself again.
To the hacker: you still can do the right thing here and come clean - you have prompted a serious wake-up call that has brought the community together which will bring more resilience for the future. Doing the noble thing now will prevent a lifelong hunt.
To all the amazing bitcoiners who have jumped to action from the very beginning to support each other and mitigate further damage - it’s been a beautiful thing to watch.
To the @blocks team and especially @intangiblecoins, your efforts are inspiring and provide me with hope. Believe me when I say that IF I ever get my coins back you will all be taken care of very well, along with massive donations to the open source community.
For now I will withhold any judgement towards @nvk and the @Coinkite team - while I’m still processing this loss and dealing with the gravity of building my life up from the ruins - I have 0 anger or resentment. Bitcoin security is a tough job, mistakes are made, and lessons are learned by all. I made mistakes by trusting and not verifying as well as not having a more robust security solution so the responsibility must be shared, hindsight is 20/20 and even though it’s tough: I’m okay admitting that. Bitcoin humbles all.
Having said all that… I’M NOT FUCKING LEAVING!!! I will start building a new stack from the ground up like all the other plebs as my conviction in Bitcoin is even stronger today then when I got my first coins in 2013.
This was never about the money - it was always about the revolution, and that can’t be stopped. We will win.
Let’s keep our heads high.
The march continues.
It’s time to rebuild.
PS: Thanks for everything Satoshi ❤️

This is the tweet that broke the camel's back. This man potentially saved tens, if not hundreds, of millions of dollars in Bitcoin. Kevin will forever be a hero, a Bitcoin legend.
Sometimes, trust your guts. Even when you are told it's FUD. Turns out I was right, and that instinct saved so many fucking people. 5 days later, I think I'm not needed anymore, thank you everyone who trusted me and spread the word so quickly.
I'll write a "post mortem" as I lived it, as I think it's probably going to stay as my most valuable contribution to Bitcoin. Good night people, I hope you are safe.

SCANDAL: Coldcard knew about the randomness flaw for years, and ignored it
Apparently this draining has been happening for years to a few unsuspecung users, meaning that someone was aware of the randomness flaw since a few years ago.
In 2022, a brand new Coldcard user was drained after transferring funds to it.

Look, I really like nvk, but this definitely makes it a scandal now, given that the victim was blocked for reporting this, and this could possibly see Coinkite employees getting put on trial for this.

Old news presented as new. Strategy announced this authorization on June 29 as part of its capital-management framework. It permits, but does not require, BTC sales for stated purposes. No new authorization was announced, and we expect to remain a net buyer of Bitcoin over time.

To be abundantly clear,
The coldcard exploit is ongoing.
PLEASE rack your brain and contact everyone you know who may self custody, directly. Even if you haven’t spoken in years. A DM is not enough. Call them. Most people are not on X and have no idea.
Every second counts.

If you think home prices crashing is bad, you have fiat brain. Homes are consumer goods and the cheaper they are the better. You only think of them as an investment asset because your money is broken & you have never known savings.

ON THIS DAY IN 2009…
The first known sale of bitcoin for USD: Martti 'Sirius' Malmi sold 5050 bitcoin for $5.02… an exchange rate of $0.0009 per BTC…
Today, those 5050 bitcoin are worth ~$565 MILLION…
Shoutout to @marttimalmi for being a true Bitcoin legend — Bitcoin would not exist as it does today without cypherpunks and pioneers like Martti who built and USED bitcoin.

Pay attention.
⚡️What you’re really seeing here is the first stage of a global unit-of-account fracture.
•In nominal USD terms, everything looks like it’s booming: stocks up triple digits, homes up double digits, “wealth” everywhere. That’s the performance everyone sees.
•In gold terms, the illusion cracks: stocks and homes flat-to-negative, real wealth stagnating.
•In Bitcoin terms, the veil is gone: catastrophic real losses in every traditional asset.
This is the same signature that marked every pre-hyperinflationary or currency regime shift in history: when people cling to the debasing unit, they feel rich but measured in the next credible collateral, their system is already collapsing.
And the “risk asset” meme about Bitcoin? That’s just a coping frame. As long as Wall Street treats BTC as a tech stock with volatility, they can keep it in the risk bucket. But functionally it’s already behaving like a parallel reserve ledger: it’s the only denominator that makes the post-2020 global economy look like Argentina.
This is why the system feels “off” - why wages don’t match prices, why debt is ballooning, why policy feels reactive. We’re in a regime where the unit of account is decaying faster than the public narrative can absorb. The Fed, the government, the media - all still speaking USD, all still benchmarking to a melting ice cube. The chart you’re looking at is the unofficial scoreboard in a silent currency war.
So when I strip all the polite commentary away, the honest take is:
•The U.S. is running the final phase of a classic imperial carry trade: draw in global capital, inflate domestic asset prices in nominal terms, export the currency risk abroad.
•Gold shows stagnation.
•Bitcoin shows collapse.
•If BTC continues to monetize, that chart is a pre-revaluation ledger of the old world being marked down.
This isn’t a normal market cycle. It’s the unit-of-account transition phase. And almost no one is positioned for it because they’re still measuring their “returns” in the wrong yardstick.
That’s the scarv layer…not just “debasement trade,” but a living record of a dying denominator.
