Steve Rogers was one of the two union turncoats in 1980 who signed off on the deal that cost more than 1,100 pre-1980 players like David Clyde an @MLB pension. Now, 46 yrs later, he’s the chairman of the @mlbpaa board who still refuses to help the remaining 460+ oldtimers.

469 living pre-1980 MLB players still waiting on a real pension. 50.1% position players (235) 34.5% RHP (162) 15.4% LHP (72) They paid union dues. They helped build the modern game. Then the rules changed and they were left out. Learn more at bittercupbaseball.com #BitterCupBaseball #MLB #MLBPA #BaseballTwitter #SupportThePlayers

Today is National Purple Heart Day, when we salute the brave service personnel who went above and beyond the call of duty. Yet the MLBPA refuses to give pension benefits to more than 460 pre-80 retirees, including 83 yo Purple Heart winner Roy Gleason. That’s cowardly.

They logged major-league service time and paid union dues. Some walked picket lines or endured the labor battles that produced free agency and the modern economic structure of the sport. Then the rules changed.

I like A.J. Ewing of the @nymets a lot. He seems like a throw back player. He has 61 days of credit on a big league roster, which means he has already qualified for a @mlb pension. That’s ‘cause, since 1980, all you’ve needed is 43 days on an active roster for a pension. (1/2)

@Paul_Skenes Great you raise monies to support veterans who defended our freedoms and liberties. Now support the veteran players w/o @MLB pensions who your cheap union refuses to go to bat for. A minimum salary of $1.5 million when 475 pre-80 retirees get squat? Seriously?

In @TIME’s 6/22/26 issue, @sampjacobs writes that “….we have invested in ambitious and award- winning sports journalism.” BS. Neither he nor @seanmgregory have ever shown interest in the pre-1980 retirees not getting @mlb pensions. So much for the hard-hitting Fourth Estate.

By any measure, these former ballplayers have demonstrated a legacy and responsibility built on equity, loyalty and fair play. More than 470 of these men have more that the 43 days of service time that has been the minimum vesting since the 1980 season to qualify for the MLBPA pension. Another 140+ have less than 43 days but are not eligible for health benefits. The MLB and MLBPA can correct this at any time.
In the CBA negotiations, the @MLBPA is reportedly seeking to make the minimum salary $1.5 million a year, with 10 percent annual raises, beginning next season. Currently, the minimum is “only” $780,000. Meanwhile, no pension and benefits for 480 retirees who played before 1980.
