Today is an emotional day for me. Together with Prof. John McCutcheon lab @ASU we have visualized by cryoEM what looks like a very funky ribosome from an insect endosymbiont.
We believe there are important evolutionary implications.
Here the pre-print:

Excited to share our new paper in @NatureComms! 🎉 A wonderful collaboration with Dan Goldberg at @washumedicine. Malaria parasites are known to digest human hemoglobin for food—but we discovered that they also use it to support their cytoskeleton. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

When imaging at high mag using cryo-ET, field of view reduces. How to overcome this limit? How do we get a "bird’s-eye view" without compromising resolution? Our very own @brown_hamish has a solution to this: “montage tomography with a rectangular beam!”

Super excited to share my postdoctoral work at @IMBA_Vienna @viennabiocenter - We discovered that some retrotransposons, or "jumping genes"🧬, are able to spread from cell to cell via a new viral infectivity route. A short thread: 🧵👇 (1/7)

A big week for the lab! Two new papers on how cells repair DNA double-strand breaks: one on getting NHEJ started in chromatin, one on processing the ends before ligation. Years of work by a fantastic team.
