If you possibly can, visit Auschwitz once in your lifetime. You won't enjoy it, but you'll be the better for it - and realise, as never before, the infinite value of even a single human life.
27 October 1941 | After an escape of a prisoner from Block 18a in Auschwitz I (in the picture) SS men chose 10 prisoners, Poles, to be starved in Block 11 cells. These were: Henryk Kozłecki (11278) Jan Skierniewski (21157) Władysław Maciąg (20908) Józef Tomczak (21373) Stanisław Kocek (21173) Stefan Kiśniewicz (16189) Zdzisław Witamborski (13882) Franciszek Roller (21086) Paweł Olszówka (21062) Wacław Kieszkowski (14634) Six of them died of starvation between 31 October and 10 November. Prisoners: Skierniewski, Tomczak, and Roller were shot on November 11 at the 'Wall of Death'. Henryk Kozłecki (in the picture) was released from the bunker to the camp on 29 October. This is the only known case of the prisoner being released from the starvation bunker. He was executed by shooting on 14 June 1942. --- Listen to our podcast about Block 11. Starvation cells were located in its basement: youtu.be/lHAmXSAcIgk

Management have introduced a new notice at the Ticket Office. Apparently, accepting bribes from passengers is considered a breach of railway regulations. I would like to make it absolutely clear that I have NEVER accepted a bribe.

Great tips from Brazil on how they turned things around for Lula online and offline: 1. Don’t ever engage, block far-right accounts immediately. 2. Don't debunk, focus on making new content on your platform. 3. Use all the tools at your disposal. 4. Be equally online and offline.

On Saturday 24th October, our MIST System was activated for its first real incident in the Southbound tunnel, in response to a vehicle fire. The Fixed Fire Suppression System was the first of its kind to be installed in a British tunnel, and it is a critical part of our tunnels safety. Activated via our SCADA monitoring system, the system can target three fire zones, including the affected zone plus one zone either side, to fully contain the fire until emergency services respond. While we hope it's rarely needed, Saturday's incident demonstrated exactly why this investment in safety and regular maintenance is so important. We are pleased to share that the incident was safely resolved within an hour, with no reported injuries, and attendance from the North East Ambulance Service was not required. A big thank you to our Operational Delivery team, as well as emergency services who responded quickly and professionally. #TyneTunnels #NorthEast

The most effective attack on Europe is one Europeans don't even recognise as an attack. Make energy expensive. Undermine food security. Discredit scientists. Divide allies. Destroy trust in institutions. Turn Europeans against each other. Once you see it you can’t unsee it.

🚨 GB "News" presenter Alex Armstrong and disinformation super-spreader Bernadette Spofforth have apologised and will pay damages to a Green party Leeds City councillor Mothin Ali after wrongly suggesting he participated in a riot in Harehills. Mothin Ali attended the riots in 2024 to assist police and appeal for calm but posts on social media accused him of taking part in the rioting, the High Court heard on Friday. Ali sued GB News presenter Alex Armstrong and social media commentator Bernadette Spofforth for defamation over posts on @X, formerly Twitter, but they have now apologised and have agreed to pay "substantial damages". Ms Spofforth rose to prominence after being arrested for sharing a fake name and false information about the perpetrator of the #Southport knife attack online but did not face any charges. The riots in Harehills, Leeds, involved widespread disorder and violent confrontations between local residents and police officers. Appearing at the High Court in London on Friday 16 October, Samantha Thompson, representing Mr Armstrong and Ms Spofforth, said the pair "apologise to the claimant for the serious harm to his reputation and his distress". The court heard Mr Armstrong published two posts viewed more than 3.1 million times while Ms Spofforth’s post was viewed 216,000 times. Mr Armstrong’s second post suggested Mr Ali had sought to dishonestly distance himself from the rioting. Reading a statement in court agreed between Mr Ali and Mr Armstrong, Axel Landin, representing Mr Ali, said that a senior police officer had requested the councillor’s assistance at the riots to help quell unrest. He said Mr Ali "attended the scene, appealed for calm, acted as a liaison between police and the community, escorted members of the public away from danger and put out fires himself." Mr Landin said the allegations were republished by others, causing Mr Ali to be stopped on the street on numerous occasions "forcefully and in strong language". He said: "He has also suffered vile racist abuse online. This has caused the claimant significant harm, upset, distress and embarrassment." In a statement outside court, Mr Ali said: "While buses burned, I stayed there to limit the damage. "To limit the harm to my community and for my service to my community, I was not only accused of rioting, but something I take even more seriously: my honesty was brought into question." He said he had been on the scene "wrestling pallets out of people’s hands, pulling bins from fires and rallying the community to gather water to put out the fires". Mr Ali said his family lived in fear after the social media posts and his car was damaged. He added: "Black and brown public figures not only do not always get the recognition deserved and more than earned, but they get a level of scrutiny and smears far greater than their counterparts."

We have self-driving taxis, rockets that land themselves, and now cars doing backflips. Meanwhile, millions of people believe vaccines cause autism, chemtrails are real, and scientists are part of a global conspiracy. Think about that. We’ve taught machines to do things we once thought impossible. But we still haven’t taught humans to distinguish evidence from nonsense.
