I went to the British Soft Drinks Association Industry Lunch.
The UK soft drinks industry is a major British industry, worth £26.3 billion, supporting more than 56,000 jobs.
It’s also an important part of our local economy and source of jobs with Britvic’s plant in Beckton.

The Packaging Recovery Note (PRN) system was designed to improve the UK's recycling. In reality, it has piled costs onto retailers and producers, while recycling rates have fallen.
The BRC, @Foodanddrinkfed, and @BritSoftDrinks agree - time for a rethink.

In response to Shadow Chancellor @griffitha's announcement today that a future @Conservatives government would scrap #ExtendedProducerResponsibility, BSDA Director General, Andy Bagnall, said:
“Stability and certainty from government are essential to give businesses the confidence to operate and invest, so it is important that the recycling tax landscape is considered as a system.
“The soft drinks sector is contributing the majority of the more than £1 billion being invested in the #DepositReturnScheme, which will boost recycling and secure supplies of recycled plastic and aluminium.
“With the scheme going live in October next year, and the debate around the cost and complexity of the UK’s packaging system intensifying, it’s clear that we need a more joined-up approach building on that programme.
“The Plastic Packaging Tax no longer provides the same incentive to drive greater recycling, Packaging Recovery Notes can create significant cost volatility, while Extended Producer Responsibility has led to double charging businesses and adding costs for consumers.
“Rationalising the system would reduce unnecessary costs, support growth and create a simpler framework, while continuing to protect the environment and increase recycling. A review of legacy policies is needed to provide greater stability, simplicity and certainty.”

💡📚 Nothing captures the evolution of the British soft drinks sector quite like the 2026 Annual Industry Insights Report, published by our British member association, the @BritSoftDrinks Association (BSDA).
What does this report tell us?
🔹 The UK soft drinks market reached a total value of £26.3 billion (€30.7bn) in 2025, reinforcing the sector's important role in the UK economy.
🔹The UK soft drinks sector contributes around £5.6 billion (€6.5bn) in value added to UK GDP and supports nearly 56,000 jobs, including almost 17,000 direct roles mostly in highly skilled manufacturing.
🔹BSDA members continue to make on health and wellbeing. More than seven in every 10 soft drinks sold in the UK are no-/low-calorie, with these products accounting for 71.4% of total soft drinks sales, demonstrating the sector’s strong progress in reducing sugar.
🔹 The UK soft drinks sector continues to invest in packaging circularity, including financing beverage collection infrastructure to improve recycling rates. It has contributed the majority of the more than £1 billion (€1.2bn) being invested to establish a UK-wide Deposit Return Scheme (DRS), supporting the creation of more than 4,300 jobs related to this scheme.

The European Food Safety Authority (@EFSA_EU) has re-confirmed the safety of aspartame and acesulfame K.
Released today, the EFSA’s latest scientific opinion concluded that aspartame (E 951), acesulfame K (E 950) and the salt of aspartame-acesulfame (E 962) do not pose a safety concern for consumers at current levels of exposure. The Acceptable Daily Intake is 40 mg/kg body weight per day for aspartame, and 15 mg/kg body weight per day for acesulfame K.
In relation to aspartame, the EFSA also found that the available evidence does not support a causal link between current dietary exposure and adverse health effects, including cancer.
This latest assessment provides further reassurance on the safety of aspartame and acesulfame K, following the EFSA’s recent, positive safety assessments of other non-sugar sweeteners, including sucralose and neotame. See here for more: britishsoftdrinks.com/articl…
The appointment of Exchange for Change in Wales means a single Scheme Administrator across the United Kingdom – a crucial milestone in delivering a successful Deposit Return Scheme by October 2027 – but there is now no time to lose on implementation.
With little more than a year until go-live, it is welcome that Exchange for Change can work with the Welsh Government and stakeholders across the supply chain to establish the conditions for delivering the scheme in Wales in a way that avoids unnecessary cross-border complexity.
However, while preparations are already well advanced for launching the Deposit Return Scheme in October 2027 for England, Scotland and Northern Ireland, delivering the scheme in Wales within such a short timeframe means there can be no further delays. Wales’ decision to include glass from day one also creates significant additional operational complexity, and the Welsh Government must continue to be realistic about what’s possible in the time.
We look forward to working constructively with Exchange for Change, the Welsh Government and partners across the supply chain to address these challenges and deliver a Deposit Return Scheme in Wales that increases recycling, reduces litter, and works for consumers, businesses and the environment.

An unprecedented coalition of members from the @BritSoftDrinks, @the_brc, @beerandpub and @NSWA_UK is calling on the @Plaid_Cymru Government in Wales to take urgent action to keep the Deposit Return Scheme on track.
With fewer than 15 months until launch, some of the UK’s biggest drinks manufacturers and grocery retailers are urging ministers to appoint Exchange for Change as scheme administrator for Wales and to take a cautious approach to the inclusion of glass before it’s too late.

Drinks manufacturers, retailers and hospitality bodies representing more than 9,000 businesses have written to the Welsh Government urging it to appoint a Deposit Return Scheme administrator before the Senedd elections in May. Time is of the essence to keep Wales aligned with the UK-wide scheme launching in October 2027 (1/4)
Industry is calling on the Welsh Government to:
1. Appoint a scheme administrator urgently
2. Engage with industry
3. Minimise glass-enabled reverse vending machine requirements
4. Resolve cross-border/fraud risks
5. Take a pragmatic, cautious approach to glass
