My book of 2025, the foreign adventures of the great travel writer Norman Lewis, superbly edited & collected by the founder of Eland Books, John Hatt, who has done more than anyone to resurrect Lewis from the dusty unread. Eland is still incapable of publishing a dud book.

This is seriously worth watching - Russia isolated, Ukrainian forces more motivated to fight, NATO expanding and arming Kyiv. Brutal strategic assessment of Putin’s war on Russian TV
In an extremely rare moment of candour on Russian state TV today, defence columnist Mikhail Khodaryonok gave a damning assessment of Russia's war in Ukraine and his country's international isolation. It's fairly long but worth your time so I've added subtitles.

Why the West is such a disastrous failure in dealing with Putin. Brilliant piece written by ⁦@anneapplebaum⁩ that dissects our leader’s inability to stand up to the most dangerous thug we’ve seen in decades. I agree with every word in this article theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv…

Before leaving for holiday I was engrossed by this (free) exhibition of virtuoso baroque lime wood carver Grinling Gibbons (1648-1721).This is a cravat he carved to remind us wood is no hinderance if you have the tools and the wherewithal. Horace Walpole wore it! @bonhams1793
