It’s impossible to keep up with misinformation that’s spreading on social media about the whale stranding in Bandra on Saturday morning. From claims of it being a humpback whale to it being AI generated and the worst, that the whale was killed on purpose for oil and ambergris. Some facts: The Blue whale calf which was first noticed by staff working at the VBSL staff at around 7:30AM, who informed the Mumbai Police and the Mumbai Fire Brigade in an effort to start rescue efforts. By the time the @MumbaiStranding team reached the site, the calf, which was injured and bleeding had passed away. Do we need better infrastructure and reporting systems for such incidents? Yes. But to say the whale was allowed to die or was deliberately killed is absolute rubbish and disrespectful to every person who was there that day. Marine mammal science and conservation in India is in its nascency. We adapt to, and work with what we have, and we learn from each experience so the next time something similar happens we can be better prepared. Thank you, @ranjeetnature for reporting what actually happened and getting the truth out. – at Mumbai, India

Second Olive Ridley turtle trying to nest at Juhu beach chased away by people this month. We know of at least 3 such cases from just this month. It's time to stop treating these as freak instances and maybe think of our beaches as turtle nesting sites! mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-ne…

Fantastic workshop. We hope the next one is in Mumbai.
We had a great time over the past eight days hosting the Primer to Conservation Bioacoustics workshop at @IiserTirupati. With a set of 24 enthusiastic participants pan-India and their exciting projects and ideas; we look forward to more in the future!

With monsoon, it's inevitable that marine mammals - dolphins, turtles, whales - will land up on #Mumbai's shores, likely dead, injured or ill. The city’s stranding network has been preparing for this, to help out the injured and glean info from the dead: hindustantimes.com/cities/mu…

This #WorldEnvironmentDay‌ I'd like to share two very big milestones @MLOMumbai crossed a few days ago. Our marine biodiversity database has 10,886 observations of 602 species from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. A 🧵 on what this means and why it's important.

A humpback dolphin at the @mybmcCoastalRd construction site in Worli. While it's easy to call this resilience, it shows just how invisible the city's marine life and the sea have been in policy making & environmental discussions. Cetaceans of the Back Bay | @ccfindia_, 2022.

The well-being of marine spaces comes with an aspect that relatively few of us engage with - the coastal communities. We talk to Ishaan Khot, Rahul Muralidharan, Shiba Desor and Shweta Wagh who have engaged in different ways with coastal communities. zoom.us/meeting/register/tJw…
