It’s impossible to keep up with misinformation that’s spreading on social media about the whale stranding in Bandra on Saturday morning. From claims of it being a humpback whale to it being AI generated and the worst, that the whale was killed on purpose for oil and ambergris. Some facts: The Blue whale calf which was first noticed by staff working at the VBSL staff at around 7:30AM, who informed the Mumbai Police and the Mumbai Fire Brigade in an effort to start rescue efforts. By the time the @MumbaiStranding team reached the site, the calf, which was injured and bleeding had passed away. Do we need better infrastructure and reporting systems for such incidents? Yes. But to say the whale was allowed to die or was deliberately killed is absolute rubbish and disrespectful to every person who was there that day. Marine mammal science and conservation in India is in its nascency. We adapt to, and work with what we have, and we learn from each experience so the next time something similar happens we can be better prepared. Thank you, @ranjeetnature for reporting what actually happened and getting the truth out. – at Mumbai, India

Second Olive Ridley turtle trying to nest at Juhu beach chased away by people this month. We know of at least 3 such cases from just this month. It's time to stop treating these as freak instances and maybe think of our beaches as turtle nesting sites! mid-day.com/mumbai/mumbai-ne…

This #WorldEnvironmentDay‌ I'd like to share two very big milestones @MLOMumbai crossed a few days ago. Our marine biodiversity database has 10,886 observations of 602 species from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. A 🧵 on what this means and why it's important.

Sea sparkle (Noctiluca) blooms have been in the news and continue to intrigue us every time we see them. But what's behind this pretty glow, really? Photos: @Pugdandee, @a_jamalabad Text: @a_jamalabad, @MahiMankeshwar #MarineLifeofMumbai

#Thread Mumbai's busy, busy seashores right now are home to squid egg masses. Look closely at the translucent balloon like bunches in the first photo, and you'll see the tiny individual eggs in them, each the size of a sabudana. 1/3 Photo: @Pugdandee

Inside each of these, a tiny squid embryo develops in a series of stages. This photo shows mid-stage embryos. The paddle-like thing on each miniature squid is a sac of yolk, which slowly transfers its contents into the embryo as it grows up. 2/3 Photo: @a_jamalabad

#photoessay A closer look at #Mumbai’s #shore revealed a world of colour under the murky water and transformed how photographer Sarang Naik saw the city he grew up in — not just an engine of growth, but also a site of wilderness. @MLOMumbai @Pugdandee bit.ly/MumbaiTidePools
