If you aim to hire a Chief AI Officer (CAIO), this is a great article to share with senior management. "Finding the right CAIO requires a blend of strategic foresight and creativity. The talent pool is small, but we’ve ID’d a few avenues to explore. The talent pool is pretty small so far, Mathison says. And he’s been counting. Mathison began tracking the CAIO job title in 2019, researching and evaluating LinkedIn profiles in-depth. In 2020, there were some 250 results, and the numbers have been arcing upward ever since, to about 400 (2021), 500 (2022), 600 (2023), and 999 as of this week (2024). "Finding the right CAIO requires a blend of strategic foresight and creativity. Here are potential avenues to explore, and examples of the kinds of candidates you’ll find there: - Academia: Universities, labs, and research institutes are fertile ground for AI thought leadership and innovation. - Company acquisitions: If you’re large enough to consider this option, buying companies with AI expertise is another way to bring seasoned leaders into the fold. - Chief Data Officers/CDAOs: Many sitting CDOs and CDAOs already possess the skills to transition into CAIO roles, with a deep understanding of data analytics and data’s strategic value. - Internal promotions: Elevating internal candidates can help accelerate an organization’s digital and AI transformation. - Events and conferences: Industry events and conferences allow you to network with peers, hiring managers, CHROs. - Fractional models: For start-ups and scale-ups not ready to commit to a full-time CAIO, sharing an AI leader with other entities can provide strategic oversight and direction without the full-time investment or organizational overhaul. On average, a full-time CAIO can cost $378,000 per year, according to Glassdoor estimates, and some will run into six figures." “I like the fractional model,” says Mathison, who consults with hiring managers looking to fill open positions. There are benefits to be gained from part-time help. To date, many of these positions are with technology vendors or at government entities in the wake of recent AI mandates. But the ranks of the CAIO are expected to increase at enterprise organizations as well in the coming years. Once hired, CAIOs are typically viewed as critical members of the C-suite. As such, they should have a proven track record of leading successful innovation programs and a clear understanding of how AI can transform the organization with ethics and governance in mind. OMB Memo: Join the White House National Talent Search for Chief AI Officers and AI Experts! On Thursday 3/28/24, to further the Biden-Harris new Executive Order on AI, U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) Director Shalanda Young sent a memorandum to all federal agencies , directing them to name Chief AI Officers and to advance AI governance and innovation while managing AI risks in US government. "This memorandum establishes new agency requirements and guidance for AI governance, innovation, and risk management, including through specific minimum risk management practices for uses of AI in the Federal Government that impact the rights and safety of the public," OMB Director Shalanda Young said in the memo. The memo addressed three main issues: 1. Strengthening AI Governance 2. Advancing Responsible AI Innovation 3. Managing Risks from the Use of AI “Federal agencies have a distinct responsibility to identify and manage AI risks because of the role they play in our society, and the public must have confidence that the agencies will protect their rights and safety,” Young said. On Thursday 3/28/24, US Vice President Kamala Harris and OMB announced a sweeping new policy to promote the safe use of AI by the federal government. The policy includes three binding requirements that mandates all federal agencies to provide concrete safeguards against AI harm; to provide transparency for AI use cases; and to appoint a Chief AI Officer. "These new, binding requirements will promote the safe, secure and responsible use of AI by our federal government,” VP Harris said. The three binding requirements in The White House's new order include: 1. SAFEGUARDS (due Dec 1 2024): The first binding requirement mandates that federal agencies implement "concrete safeguards" when using AI, and agency CAIOs must verify that the AI tools they use will “put the public interest first and that “do not endanger the rights and safety of the American people.” The policy requires agencies to "assess, test, and monitor" the impact of AI on the general public, mitigate the risks of algorithmic discrimination and bias, and provide the public with transparency into how the government is using the technology. 2. TRANSPARENCY/INVENTORY (annual): The 2nd binding requirement mandates more transparency about government AI systems. It requires federal agencies to publish an annual inventory of their AI systems, an assessment of the potential risks they pose, and an explanation of how they are managing those risks. 3. CHIEF AI OFFICERS + AI GOVERNANCE BOARDS (due May 27): The third and final binding requirement directs every federal agency to designate a Chief AI Officer whose role is to coordinate the use of AI within their agencies. Agencies are also required to establish AI Governance Boards to coordinate and govern the use of AI across agencies. “Finally, we are requiring that every federal agency designate a Chief AI Officer who has the experience, expertise and authority to oversee all AI technologies being used by that agency. This is to make sure that AI is used responsibly, understanding that we must have senior leaders across our government who are specifically tasked with overseeing AI adoption and use,” VP Harris said of the Chief AI Officer role. Today we added the final panel video on "Data and Analytics: An Enterprise AI Playbook" moderated by Michael Krigsman, Publisher of CXOTalk, with all-star panelists: • Anthony Scriffignano,: Distinguished Fellow, The Stimson Center • Bruno Aziza: Partner, CapitalG (Alphabet Inc.) • Eoin Roche: SVP, Head of Product Adoption, KX • Mojgan Lefebvre: EVP; Chief Operations & Technology Officer, Travelers Panelists explored how to use data and analytics as the foundation for developing an enterprise AI program, from strategy and planning to execution. Among the topics explored: Developing a comprehensive AI strategy; Ensuring the right data foundation is in place; and Measuring success and encouraging adoption. For the first 5 minutes of this final panel session video, emcee Sree Sreenivasan invited CDAO Summit curator David Mathison to the stage. They discussed how Sree attended the first CDO Summit in NYC in 2013 as Chief Digital Officer at Columbia University, where he met the hiring manager for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, who subsequently hired him as their first Chief Digital Officer! At the 2nd CDO Summit in NYC, Sree met Magnus Gylie, then Chief Digital Officer at Nobel Media, who invited Sree to join the board of Nobel Prize! During his opening keynote, Mathison revealed an open post for a Global Chief AI Officer role at Equifax, and encouraged participants to update their resumes to apply for the role live during the event. He highlighted the importance of maintaining US dominance in AI, and in placing ethical, responsible, and trustworthy Chief AI Officers in the open positions at federal agencies as mandated by the White House Executive Order on AI. Since there are only a few hundred CAIOs, he noted that many CDAOs have the skills required to fill some of those open CAIO roles. While data maturity is high in terms of utilization of analytics, governance maturity is low due to lack of processes and capabilities like a catalog * Innovation and value are two sides that need to be carefully balanced in the healthcare industry. While there are many potential opportunities realized with GenAI and new technologies, it needs to be balanced.
