My landlord accidentally sent $12,000 to my bank account instead of $1,200. I noticed the mistake immediately. I had been renting his property for almost four years, so I decided to call him. He didn’t answer. I sent him a message explaining what had happened. No reply. The next morning, I tried again. Still nothing. After five days, I received a call from an unknown number. “Are you the tenant at apartment 4B?” “Yes. Who’s calling?” “This is the landlord’s daughter. My father says you received some money from him.” I explained that I had been trying to return it. She went quiet. Then she asked: “Has he told you why he sent it?” “No. I assumed it was a mistake.” She took a deep breath. “My father has been trying to reach you, but he was admitted to hospital two days ago.” I immediately asked if he was okay. “He’s stable. But there’s something you should know. That money wasn’t meant for rent.” I looked at my banking app again. “Then what was it for?” She replied: “My father sold his house last month. He told me he wanted to give that money to someone who helped him when he had nothing.” I was confused. “Why would he send it to me?” She went silent before saying: “Because he told me you’ve been paying his rent for the last six months.” I nearly dropped my phone.
