🚨 Canada's entrepreneurial drought is real. We can't keep losing businesses faster than we create them. The federal budget is a chance to change course. CFIB is calling for lower small business taxes, tariff relief & policies that make it easier to start & grow a business.

Great meeting today with NL Finance Minister Craig Pardy. We discussed the challenges facing small businesses across Newfoundland and Labrador, especially the 15% sales tax on insurance. Removing this tax must remain a priority for government. Small firms are counting on relief.

🇨🇦🇺🇸 88% of small business owners want Canada-US trade negotiations to resume as soon as possible. In a recent letter to the PM, @CFIB urges @MarkJCarney government to return to the negotiating table and provide accessible tariff relief before lasting damage is done. #CdnPoli🍁

Great meeting today with Premier Tony Wakeham and Lloyd Parrott, Minister of Red Tape Reduction, alongside CFIB Vice-President, Advocacy Corinne Pohlmann. We shared what Newfoundland and Labrador small business owners are telling us matters most: • Eliminating the 15% retail sales tax on insurance, a cost that hits small firms year after year • Continued progress on red tape reduction, so owners spend less time on paperwork and more time running their businesses • Construction mitigation legislation to support businesses hurt by long-term roadwork and infrastructure projects Thank you to the Premier and Minister for the productive conversation. We look forward to continuing to work together on behalf of NL's small businesses

With rumours that this week’s federal budget focused on small business and entrepreneurship, the big test will be whether government includes broad-based measures, like a reduction in the small business corporate tax rate. Reducing small biz taxes or a payroll tax like EI would have far more positive impacts than the traditional approach of creating new funds or complicated grant and loan programs to shower support on a handful of well-connected companies. After dozens of pre-budget meetings with Ministers and MPs with all parties, I’ll be in Ottawa on Thursday to review and comment on the budget.

This would be very welcome news. 87% of small businesses want Canada and the US to negotiate an agreement as quickly as possible. 30% of Canadian SMEs say they are at risk of permanent closure within the next 12 months if this is unresolved.
Carney’s positive trade talk comments were accompanied by an equally positive statement from the White House given to Global News #cdnpoli “The Trump Administration welcomes continued engagement with Canada as we work toward finalizing the details of a deal that will deliver meaningful results for the American people”

It is great to see a new federal red tape reduction strategy which includes several long-standing CFIB recommendations.  The new requirement for regulators to reduce regulatory burden costs by $2 for every $1 added is a significant step forward. CFIB is pleased to see @ottawacity mayoral candidates take small business concerns seriously and pledge practical measures to support them. At @CFIBNews we are advocating for the small business property tax subclass reduction to increase from 15 per cent to 25 per cent and to provide businesses with the opportunity to report red tape concerns directly to their municipalities through a dedicated portal. Both are concrete measures that will go a long way to make it easier to run a business in Ottawa. We urge all mayoral candidates in Ottawa and across Ontario to address the challenges facing small businesses by committing to reducing municipal red tape, providing tariff and tax relief, mitigating construction-related disruptions, and finding municipal savings. cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/ot… Read CFIB’s full small business election platform: cfib-fcei.ca/en/advocacy/202… #SmallBusiness #CFIBadvocacy #ottpoli #ottawamayoralelection #MunicipalElections

Thank you, Premier Smith, for listening to Alberta's small business community! Fuel costs remain the second-largest cost constraint facing small businesses, according to CFIB's Business Barometer. Suspending the fuel tax will provide welcome relief at the pump. Since July, 661 Alberta small business owners signed CFIB's petition after being left out of the Alberta Energy Rebate. Today's announcement shows those concerns were heard. #ABPoli #SmallBusiness
Global uncertainty continues to push energy prices higher, and that’s putting more pressure on Albertans’ wallets. Today I announced that relief is on the way. Starting Oct. 1, Alberta will suspend the full provincial fuel tax, saving Albertans 13 cents per litre on gasoline and diesel every time they fill up until the end of the year. This is practical relief that helps families, workers and businesses keep more money in their pockets. Albertans already pay the lowest overall taxes in Canada, and this cut adds to our unmatched tax advantage.

For 10 years, every employer organization in the country, including CFIB, urged Ottawa to use care in changing Canada's labour laws. Instead, with the support of every major political party, the scales were tipped heavily in favour of unions. Employers warned these changes, such as the recent ban on replacement workers, would lead to more strikes and economic uncertainty. This is exactly what happened. We've seen a growing number of shutdowns at major supply chain players (ports, railways, airlines, Canada Post). And the impact extends to the entire economy, including small businesses who depend on these federal regulated institutions. Now, Ottawa has to use other sweeping powers to undo the mess it created by ignoring the advice of employers. If we are trying to tell the world that Canada is a reliable place to do business and get things done, we can't keep operating like this. It is good the federal government is looking to make fresh changes.
