The Washington Post editorial board asks why ICE is detaining Hong Kong rights advocates who are here lawfully. Good question.
In 2021, then-Senator @marcorubio said the US should “open our doors” to Hongkongers who stood up to the CCP, and wrote a bill to do it. The people being arrested now are the ones he meant: screened by the State Department, admitted on US visas, protected under a directive both administrations have honored since 2021. Secretary Rubio can still make good on that.
So can Congress. The Hong Konger Promise of Refuge Act (S. 5606 / H.R. 10685) would let this closed group apply for green cards before their protection ends on February 5. It needs cosponsors from both parties.

My experience with the Christian Nationalist bros is that they've inverted virtually every commandment.
1. Not sure what God they actually serve...
2. They wish to fashion the state as an idol in their own image as a false likeness of heaven
3. Constantly take the Lord's name in vain (as here)
4. I don't know what they do with the Sabbath, but I don't see them keeping any time actually holy
5. They hate Boomers and their elders and blame them for everything going wrong in their lives and for blocking their sadistic politics
6. I don't think they've killed anyone yet, but they live for character assassination, and that'll work out in a death of despair or two sooner or later, and they do it on purpose to psychologically harm and maim
7. Haha adultery... like, let's go with the Spiderman meme or whatever they want to say, but they're really Prostituting the Church, that's for sure
8. Maybe they do or maybe they don't steal physical objects, but they rob their audiences by selling a false and wicked product, at the least and make considerable money doing it
9. Almost all they do is lie and bear false witness against their enemies AND in favor of their wicked friends, like they breathe
10. I don't know what they think about their neighbor's donkey, but they covet power more than anyone but straight Communists, and they give the Commies a serious run for their money on that

This is absolute nonsense. And dangerous. The absolute delusion among many on the right that conservatives, or MAGA, command a super electoral majority fuels all kinds of dysfunction and risks much worse. – at Manhattan, NY
If John Thune had passed Voter ID into law, we’d be talking about whether Republicans should be expecting majorities or supermajorities in the House and Senate.
Florida passed election reform laws and went from a swing state to a 20 point red state in 2 years.
But John Thune is a Deep State puppet and all he did was fight to keep the bipartisan Swamp in power.

That's what Plato warned democracy tends to collapse into, except it won't be never-ending but rather climaxes in tyranny when a sufficiently ruthless demagogue and his following take advantage of the chaos.
Could be that American politics for the rest of our lives will be parties switching power, engaging in ever more flagrant corruption and grifting, then prosecuting the other side for crimes and non-crimes, in just a never ending cycle - all while the intelligent people we want to steer politics are so bored with the Jerry Springer quality of things that they just check out.

By now, I'm ready to call Trump's obeisance to Putin "traitorous" (not the same as "treasonous," which has legal connotations). nytimes.com/2026/10/27/us/po… As @AndrewCMcCarthy has said, there should be a MAJOR investigation into his conduct. @Kasparov63 @jaynordlinger @AdamKinzinger

This is criminal behavior.... by DoJ, not by Comey. I can't stand Comey and I detest his lawyer Pat Fitzgerald. But this is utterly abusive prosecution: choosing a target, and then fishing to find a crime. It's despicable. Blanche should resign.

It’s weird how now giant sickos come with adult sippy cups and vocal fry.
At @UTSA for Pick Up the Mic, a student read a poem celebrating the assassination of Charlie Kirk with such glee, then told me I was brave to be out here without my neck covered.
I told her I’d pray for her.
This is the climate. We pick up the mic anyway.

Just a reminder that when the state’s response to criminal behavior is deemed inadequate by the community, the community will take justice into its own hands. If the city thought a decarceral approach is what this community wants, the city was very wrong.

Please take a little time to read former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig's account of torture in Chinese prison.
His case, like so many others, underscores the chasm separating rule-of-law and Party-State penal systems.
This is the true face of the CCP.
China's secret police have detained you.
You are hooded or blindfolded, handcuffed, abducted to a secret location, locked in a padded cell, and threatened with severe punishment for "harming China".

More evidence that they are not trying to meditate an end to the war in Ukraine, but instead just trying to make money.
Another stunning report, from @antontroian, on another concession Trump wants to make toward Russia.
What we have zero news of is what Russia plans to concede in exchange for this—other than money for Trump family allies.

David Reich: If you say a white British person is a pure descendant of people who lived in Britain a long time ago, "nothing could be further from the truth... And this idea that any one people is somehow purely descended from the people who lived in the past [which was something people thought prior to the genetic revolution], it’s really an untenable picture. Every time we look, it’s not true."
In the 80s, the idea developed "that as people move around, they split, they don’t remix,... But the truth is, from genetic data... all of those groups are profoundly mixed, of multiple very divergent groups..."
"And so there’s no one time that we’ve been able to reconstruct where there’s a single homogeneous population that’s ancestral to everybody who comes after. Rather, it’s some kind of constant change over time, with mixtures, separations, structuring, and coming back together... It used to be that we had this null hypothesis that no mixture occurred, and we would test that null hypothesis. And that is almost a silly null hypothesis at this point, because everybody is mixed."
"And the thing that becomes clear from ancient DNA is that... the strategy used by these direct-to-consumer ancestry testing companies of using modern-day Irish as surrogates for who lived in Ireland in the past — maybe that works in the last thousand years, but it’s not even going to really work very well 2,500 years ago or 3,000 years ago, because there’s just too much mixing and migration."
"There are interesting exceptional areas. There actually seems to be an unusually high amount of continuity over many thousands of years in many parts of the Americas, which is really fascinating. But there too, there are disruptions as well. So the pattern seems to be, for the most part, that there are periodic profound movements of people coming from somewhere else, either completely displacing or mixing with the people who were there before."
