Why does the government almost always spend in excess of taxes --i.e. run a budget deficit ? A 🧵 1/

Devastating news about the passing of Ian Shipsey! He attended the ECFA meeting just two weeks ago in Durham where he was his usual, enthusiastic self. A great loss for physics and the UK community! mpls.ox.ac.uk/latest/news/ia…

1bn cuts from education and 1bn from NHS after 14 years of Tory onslaught.
🚨 BREAKING: Rachel Reeves has begun slashing billions from education and health spending, ahead of further harsh cuts expected in a "painful" budget. Reeves is making cuts that will “really scrape the bone”. She said: "public spending is not sustainable". (Via @TheTimes)

Remember when we needed sub 1% rates to get inflation to 2% And now that inflation is at 2% we need 5% rates. How is it not obvious to everyone these central bankers (planners) are clueless?? They should be laughed at not revered.

The Bank of England used the inflation crisis to boost the wealth of the wealthy, but did nothing at all to control inflation taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2024… Look at the data in the latest in the last Bank of England forecasts and compare it with IMF-created data on the causes of inflation, and the conclusion is obvious. We never needed interest rate rises. But, now we have them, the Bank will not let them go, because they're far too popular with the rich and bankers.

Farewell Klute, the best nightclub outside Moscow, after working there dealing with SW1 felt like easy mode. Few know my dad & uncles named it after watching the classic 70s film, watch it if you never have (Maybe The Startup Party should buy the building for our northern HQ...)

The UK has spent more £ than it took back in tax revenues for more than 300 years. Don't let anyone tell you that "there is no money", "the government credit card is maxed out" or that there would be no "magic money tree": that's all nonsense on stilts! 💷 articles.obr.uk/300-years-of…

Taxes are for regulating the value of the currency (inflation), (dis)incentivizing behaviors, and altering the distribution of wealth and income. Gilts are for managing interest rates. Austerity is a policy failure that occurs when politicians fail to grasp these basics.
“If you win the election, will you tax more, borrow more or become the austerity prime minister?” This is THE unanswered question for Labour

“The magic money tree is an inherently conservative narrative. It deliberately propagates a false understanding of how the economy works… It seeks to delegitimise public spending, framing policies that improve conditions for ordinary people as unrealistic and wasteful.”
Labour's Rachel Reeves claims 'there's no magic money tree'

“A cost shock is a great time to raise prices. But when costs fall, price-setting firms do not have the same incentive to decrease prices," I spoke to the @guardian about why prices aren’t coming down the way they shot up. theguardian.com/business/202…

The debate around @UKLabour's Green Prosperity Plan has focused too much on the sums that would be spent, rather than on how best to deploy them, notes @MazzucatoM. Click the link to bypass the paywall and read the piece. bit.ly/42bJvFL

The good news this Christmas is that £1 trillion of the UK’s national debt does not exist taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2023… Restating the national debt based on facts and not the fantasy accounting used by the Office for National Statistics shows that £1 trillion of it does not, and cannot, exist. If this fact (for fact, it is) was accepted, we could transform the UK economy overnight. That would create a Happy Christmas.

What happens if you drop an anti-apple? In a paper published today in @Nature, the ALPHA collaboration at CERN’s Antimatter Factory shows that, within the precision of their experiment, atoms of antihydrogen – a positron orbiting an antiproton – fall to Earth in the same way as their matter equivalents. This result is a milestone in the study of the properties and behaviour of antimatter. Find out more: home.cern/news/news/physics/…
