The best thing about a Twitter sabbatical is knowing it doesn't matter if you ever come back.
We're starting something new at @business. Pointed, our new weekly news quiz, is a mashup of pub trivia, Learned League, and your neighborhood poker game. A news quiz that tests your strategy, not just your recall. bloomberg.com/games/pointed
FiveThirtyEight -- which is reportedly being shuttered today -- was more than a data repository. It was the launchpad for hundreds of careers, and its journalistic principles have suffused places big and small in the past 11 years.
I spent nine years there (and was laid off two years ago). We had plenty of warts, but our mission wasn't one of them: Evidence-based journalism that embraced uncertainty. We tried to make lasting work even as we updated our assumptions. No place like it.
God it's dusty in here. Shaking off the cobwebs to say that I, too, have started a newsletter. It's not about the news! It's called Writ Small, and it's about the best in kids' media. Weekly, essayistic, free. First one is up: open.substack.com/pub/writsm… Subscribe as you see fit!
I've spent 9.5 years at FiveThirtyEight, but won't make it 10. I was laid off today as part of Disney's cuts. My colleagues and I built a website out of nothing, and journalism changed because of it. There are worse legacies.
More reflections to come once things shake out.

What do you do when you have basically become a minor deity to a species of butterfly that relies on you to guide its life across generations — and the damn thing won’t be fruitful and multiply?

When I blab about the potential of data-driven feature journalism, this @maggiekb1 feature is what I am talking about. About one endangered butterfly, and what it can teach us about finding hope in climate uncertainty. fivethirtyeight.com/features…

The connections between individuals charged in relation to Jan. 6 reveals how the right ideology can engage disparate extremist groups on the right and create a powerful, dangerous coalition. My latest, with @holly_fuong using data from @MikeAJensen fivethirtyeight.com/features…
.@ameliatd is easily one of the best abortion reporters in the country and is really showing it today. We just published her meditation on how abortion has defined the last half-century of politics, and will likely do the same for the next half-century.

America is stuck in so many cycles of violence and grief. For a small but important slice of Americans, the desire to change the status quo is also cyclical.
