Mayibuye Movement Takes Final Campaign Push To The Streets Of Giyani
The Afrika Mayibuye Movement has mobilised scores of its members and volunteers in Giyani ahead of its final campaign push for the Greater Giyani Municipality, as political parties intensify their efforts to win over voters ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
The movement's supporters gathered at the statue of VaTsonga King Mdungazi Ngungunyani on Saturday, 31 October 2026, ahead of a planned final push motorcade through the streets of Giyani.
The campaign activation is expected to see volunteers take the movement's message directly to communities, encouraging residents to give Afrika Mayibuye an opportunity to lead the municipality.
Its Greater Giyani mayoral candidate, Erick Nkovani, popularly known as "Papa Penny", is leading the final mobilisation drive, appealing to residents to support the movement at the ballot box on 4 November.
The motorcade forms part of the movement's last campaign efforts to consolidate support and persuade undecided voters before election day.
With just days remaining before voters head to the polls, the Giyani activation signals Mayibuye's determination to challenge established political formations and position itself as an alternative in the municipality.
The movement is seeking to turn its campaign momentum into votes as political competition intensifies across Limpopo.

China has joined Germany and Russia in publicly challenging Washington's exclusion of South Africa from the G20, as foreign ministers from the world's leading economies gather in Atlanta. Beijing says South Africa remains an important member of the grouping and should continue participating in its activities. The intervention adds to growing diplomatic pressure on the Trump administration, which has refused to invite Pretoria to meetings under its G20 presidency, including December's leaders' summit in Miami.

Was the crying part of the media statement? Some of us will never cry for party political decisions or false accusations…. Never! We never mourn, we organise ourselves better. Tough Luck brother, the chicken audacity you displayed in the beginning is now reduced to tears.
This is by far the worst argument I’ve heard.
Replying to @PatNkosi4983
You must remember that all people carry their cultural weapons even during Marches here in RSA.
We have encouraged and tolerated the public carrying and use of cultural weapons.
In Ethiopia, carrying firearms has evolved into a deeply rooted cultural tradition where guns are viewed as symbols of heritage, honor, and community defense, rather than just tools of modern warfare.
Historically, Ethiopians carried traditional melee weapons like the shotel (a curved sword) and shields for combat, hunting, and ceremonies.
However, because Ethiopia successfully resisted European colonization—most famously defeating the Italian army at the Battle of Adwa in 1896—the country acquired vast numbers of European rifles early on.
Over the centuries, these firearms became integrated into the cultural fabric of many ethnic groups, such as the Amhara, Tigrayan, Afar, Somali, and various pastoralist communities in the Omo Valley.
Today, carrying a rifle or an AK-47 serves several cultural purposes:
Symbol of Status and Manhood: In many rural and pastoralist communities, owning and openly carrying a rifle is a rite of passage, representing a man’s capability to protect his family, livestock, and land.
Family Heirloom: Rifles are frequently treated as valuable property passed down from generation to generation, symbolizing a lineage of warriors and protectors.
Ceremonial Use: Firearms play a prominent role in traditional dances, weddings, funerals, and major religious celebrations, such as escorting the Tabot (holy replicas of the Ark of the Covenant) during Ethiopian Orthodox Church holidays.
Currency and Wealth: In specific traditions (like those of the Afar and Somali communities), rifles hold such high cultural value that they are sometimes used alongside camels as bride wealth (dowry).
While civilian firearm ownership is strictly limited in urban centers like Addis Ababa, it remains a visible and legal part of daily life and travel in many rural regions.
